Class was dismissed. Felorin stretched theatrically. “I do wish they would stop bringing in so many baby Candidates,” she groused prettily. “Let us established Candidates do the Standing. And spare us from the constant repeat of lectures about Weyrlife.”
"At the very least let us do something more useful than this." Aydhara agreed. "Helping out the dragonhealers, washing dragons. The way we have to sit through 'weyr culture' lessons like I was Searched."
“We dragonhealers could always use the extra hands,” Sareya said with some pride now that she felt worthy of her apprentice knots.
Felorin’s gaze fell sweetly and viciously on the younger teenager. Inwardly, she thought Sareya was also one of those who should wait another Turn or two before Standing, even though the girl had been Standing for Turns already. “Of course they could. Especially when they have such green to their numbers. How are your studies going? Are you studying enough?”
Sareya caught something in the older woman’s tone that made her shift internally. “Of course I am. I’m studying with both the Weydragonhealer _and_ my grandmother,” she answered with a bit of defensive pride. She was learning quickly and well!
Felorin made a pretty little sound that threw doubt all over the quality of that instruction. With a drawn-out sigh, she rose gracefully. “Aydhara, are you going to that party at A’tal’s weyr tonight?” she asked, pointedly leaving Sareya out of the question.
Aydhara glanced over at Sareya, eyebrows raised in silent confusion. "Uh, no. Back up a second. Are you trying to talk shit about our dragonhealers as a profession, or mad that Sareya's being mentored by her grandmother? How petty are you trying to be?"
Felorin smiled as though she didn’t care that she was being called out. “I’m just saying that they could have a bit more of a…standard when adding to the craft. Dragons are very special creatures. They deserve the highest amount of care.”
“Are you insinuating that I’m _not_ good enough to be a dragonhealer?” Sareya suddenly asked, shocked.
“I’m not insinuating anything, sweetie,” Felorin replied with a toothy smile. “We’ve all seen what nepotism does in the Holds. Maybe we stay away from that sort of practice in the Weyr.”
"Pff. Yeah, sure." Aydhara said. "You're in the wrong place if that's the stand you want to take, Felorin. My Mom's the Weyrwoman's Second and my Dad's bronze is the sire for the next clutch. Go annoy someone else."
Felorin made a sweetly tittering sound. “Mmm, such a lineage to live up to,” she said. “How horrible would it be if a dragon never picks you, right?” She stretched again and let out a breath. “We can do this all day, Aydhara. It’s all just a game to entertain us until we Impress.”
"Way better chances than you." Aydhara said. "Besides, you're older than me. That's a 'game' you're set up to lose. C'mon Sareya, I bet Mom would stop whatever she's doing to see us."
While Felorin made a pretty little condescending sound at the mention of Aydhan, Sareya practically leaped at the opportunity to hang out with Aydhara and her mother. In her mind, it just cemented her belief that she belonged with goldriders somehow. “That sounds great! Let’s bring her a snack from the kitchens too. They made those berry tarts this morning.”
"Yes! Maybe Tymborikath will let us love on her a bit. If she remembers liking you, I bet she'll let you sneak into the hatching sands with me." Aydhara said both too brightly and too loudly, just for Felorin. She looped her arm around Sareya's and guided her away.
