K'mai barely waited for an acknowledgement before he stepped into the Weyrlingmaster Second's office. "M'thos, hi. I hope Fianwyth is well?"
M'thos was tossing his pen down the moment K'mai opened the door. "She's well. How's Sebeth doing, after that nasty knock you both took?"
"He's fine. He just got a little bruising, and I have a new scar." K'mai lifted his arm, although his long sleeves covered the scar.
"Hot." M'thos deadpanned. "What can I do for you? You have that look about you."
"I wanted to invite you and T'mhas to dinner at my weyr. I have, um . . . someone special I'd like you to meet." Why was he suddenly feeling shy?
M'thos looked skeptical. "I'm going to need more details, considering what's known to go on in your weyr. I learned the hard way that T'mhas is not particularly interested in orgies."
K'mai laughed and then waved a hand. "It's not an orgy. It's not a sex party. It's just dinner, really."
"Why are we being coy if the clothes are staying on, buddy?" M'thos asked, though the teasing tone didn't leave. It was a similar tone that he used with his children and errant weyrlings.
K'mai covered another flicker of nervousness with a joke. "If the clothes were coming _off_ I wouldn't be coy about it. H--they want to explain things to you. Look, it's . . . it's a big deal for them, so please be gentle, okay?"
"So you're asking me to agree to, and then convince my weyrmate to attend, a double date with you where we don't know who the fourth person is?" M'thos asked.
"Uhhh . . . yes." K'mai's cheeks heated. "I wish I could say more, I _really_ do. I know it's a weird thing to ask, but it's really important to us, so . . . please?"
M'thos continued to look skeptical, but this time his grin turned sly. "All right, keep your secrets. What kind of dinner is this? Is Sabia going to be there?"
K'mai shook his head and tried to think of what he might be able to say. "I'm really not trying to be difficult about this. I promised to keep this person safe, and for them to be willing to do this at all is a big step." He frowned thoughtfully. "This is . . . something new for both of us and we're trying to navigate this the best we can."
"I say this as fondly as I would to T'mhas, who, besides Fianwyth, appears to be the love of my life. It is I that's trying to be difficult." M'thos said, "So it sounds like a serious no-kids party. Tamerel will be so disappointed, but he'll survive. Should I bring wine?"
"Wine would be nice, thanks. And yes, no kids," K'mai said. "Maybe next time we can have dinner in your weyr and I'll bring Sabia so Tamerel can have a playmate." Hopefully that would be okay. I'serin had said he didn't mind the kids.
"He'd enjoy that." M'thos said, though continued with his bit, "And what's the dress code, if we must be clothed the entire time? This worth the Hatching Feast finery?"
"I wasn't planning on this being fancy. Just regular clothes are fine."
M'thos looked thought for a second. "Are you cooking?"
"I wouldn't put anyone through that," the bluerier said with a chuckle. "I'm getting food from the kitchens."
"Hmmm. All right. Keep your secrets." M'thos said. "We'll see you in a few days. I'm sure we could both use the distraction."
"I'm very much looking forward to it. Thank you, M'thos." K'mai would finally, _finally_ be able to talk to people about his relationship with I'serin.
