H'run

H'run

Some words did not belong together. H'run rubbed his inky fingers over his face, cursing A'khal and his silvery hair and handsome smile. It was A'khal's fault he said he'd write a poem that rhymed 'stars' and 'abattoirs'.

Stars and abattoirs. It sounded like a curse and would make for a garbage poem. Maybe he'd set it to music and make it a song instead. Would that help? He blew out a frustrated breath, then reached out to Calcifeth. **What are you doing?**

}:Lying on the beach,:{ Calcifeth sent back. }:I am looking at the _stars_.:{

**You _are_ an abattoir. A flying one,** H'run told him. **Who are you with? Anyone whose rider I might like?**

Calcifeth was quiet a moment as he conferred with the dragons around him. }:I am told that A'khal is in his weyr. _Alone_.:{

And if he went to A'khal's weyr, what sort of reception would he get? Would the Wingthird greet him warmly or be standoffish and cool? Would he want to share an intimate evening or simply a friendly drink? Would he want to see him at all?

Guilt stabbed his middle. He was in love with K'mai, not A'khal. It was K'mai who he should be thinking of. Simultaneously: K'mai wouldn't care. It didn't matter who he slept with or didn't, or whose company he sought. He was here at Dolphin Cove Weyr because he was nothing. An annoyance, a clingy and unwanted burden who couldn't compare to a boring bronzerider with baby cheeks.

He groaned and rested his head against the tabletop. Heartbreak was awful. **Why does this keep happening to me?** It wasn't the first time that he'd been rejected and with the way his life was going, this was going to keep happening. He'd find someone bright and beautiful and they'd lie about how they felt, or laugh in his face, or drop him like a hot coal. Or all three, simultaneously.

}:Come to the beach,:{ Calcifeth said, interrupting his spiralling thoughts. }:The waves are still warm and we can swim together. I like swimming.:{

The sea was vast, the stars were infinite, and H'run realized that he was in no mood for human company. A'khal deserved better than the dour, weepy mess that he was. All his friends here did: Esiah, Cosani, B'nell. His company was unbearable-- for humans.

**I'm coming, my love.** H'run stood and straightened his bowed shoulders. He might not have a human love, but he had a sky's worth of draconic adoration. And tonight, the stars were shining brightly.
