The heat of the tropics hit J'nne as Tribeth broke out of /between/. Immediately he opened his flight jacket as his bronze flew in the direction of their destination. It had been so long, too long perhaps. J'nne looked towards the Harper Hall, the place he had once assumed would be his home when he came of age. But a bronze sized lump had changed all that.
}:Do you regret it?:{
**You're not supposed to be listening in!** Immediately J'nne felt terrible. **But no, you're much much more than anything I ever had or could imagine.** And really, Tribeth was. J'nne was so far removed from that young man who had tried to wiggle out of every trap the old River Buff Weyrwoman, Rhoslyn, had tried to set up to convince him to Stand. But for all her gruff ways, she had been right. She had always said he'd be on bronze. Wonder where she was now? J'nne felt a stab of pain, thinking of his old life at River Buff.
}:I'm sorry you hurt. Some of the older dragons remember it too:{ Jaylene and J'zen's greens still often spoke about it to the much younger bronze.
As he spoke the bronze carefully caught a lower thermal that would take them along the river to the Harper Hall. The buildings of Emerald Falls disappeared swiftly under Tribeth's wings, to be replaced by the structures that made up the Harper Hall. Unconsciously J'nne shifted his shoulder, making sure his beloved violin was still there after the jump /between/.
As they banked to land, J'nne saw all the faces peering out of the windows, apprentices no doubt who found a bronze much more fascinating than their lessons. What would they think if they knew the bronze rider was thinking the opposite? He loved Tribeth but he was a sorry excuse of a bronzerider, he was an artist at heart.
}:I didn't want one of _those_bronzeriders, I wanted you:{ Tribeth curved his wings to land. }:And_that_makes you a bronzerider.:{
"Okay okay I'm sorry," J'nne laughed.
}:Good:{ Tribeth's tone was firm but the glance back at his rider was almost sad.
J'nne slid off his shoulder and rushed around to cradle Tribeth's chin. "I'm sorry, don't listen to me." He felt Tribeth's love for him flood his mind. "Love you too, you big lump," he teased before giving the dragon a thump on the cheek. **I won't be too long.**
}:It's okay, I enjoy listening to you play:{
With one more affectionate pat on the cheek, J'nne walked away from the bronze and into the Harper Hall. One of the classical violin Master's apprentices was already waiting for him in the archway. "Hello," he said with a smile for the young lad who was all arms and legs and eyes that stared at Tribeth with longing. "He's harder to take care of than you'd think," he said in a teasing tone.
The boy jumped and looked at him with a shy grin. "Oh, I'm sure sir, but still..." Reluctantly he waved J'nne into the dark of the Harper Hall.
As he walked J'nne wondered if he'd run into Kamalia's brother Arrilon. He personally didn't know him, and then thought why would the man seek him out? More than likely Kamalia had forgotten all about J'nne. It wasn't like he had followed up on his offer to take her out. No, he had had that one fling and left her with an empty promise. Maybe he wasn't as far removed from other bronzeriders as he liked to pretend he was.
And he had really liked her too. He'd love to ask her out, but would she accept after all this time? True, moving and adjusting to a new wing had taken more time and energy then he had thought possible. And then there had been the death of Riyanth and he and J'zen had spent months supporting their sister as she had to take on more than a typical wingthird, both physically and mentally, in the Queen's Wing. But was that an excuse? Or was he just being an indecisive coward?
}:She should be Rising soon.:{
**You listening in to my thoughts?**
}:Yes, they're very loud today. And I like Alaudath. She was fun.:{
With an inward groan, J'nne tried to focus his mind on the reason he was here today. It had stemmed from the last Hatching, when Master Franell had heard him playing a duet with Jaylene. You have a rare talent, son, the master had said, come to the Hall for private lessons. And so here he was, in the Harper Hall.
Maybe things were turning out as he had hoped all those turns ago, after all.
