Temrin

T'erin

Temrin had very few expectations when he stepped onto the boiling sands of Barrier Lake. While his peers had spent time agonizing over Impressing or not, or what color they might Impress if they did, he had spent his time focused on winning his father's attention.

Now that he was in an uncomfortably itchy white robe, on sands hot enough to scald, with hundreds of faces peering down at him, he suddenly wished he'd listened a bit more in those Candidate lessons.

The colors of the dragonets that hatched meant very little to him. He didn't really care what color he Impressed, so long as one of the dragonets found him worthy. Some of the other Candidates seemed to find great worth or identity in the different colors of dragons, but Temrin had no preconceived prejudices against the spectrum of colors.

After his father's comments about dragonriding, he'd worried that the man wouldn't even show, but he was finally able to spot Teigan in the stands just before the first egg cracked.

A green dragonet and then a brown appeared from the eggs onto the Sands.

He watched as Riali and Neymar both left the Sands with the dragons, a small part of him envious.

Temrin glanced up at his father, noting the tight-lipped expression on his stoic face. Would he think him a failure if he didn't Impress? **No, it would probably thrill him,** he thought, remembering his father's advice to just focus on his craft.

His attention was brought back to the matter at hand as he was nearly clipped by a stumbling brown dragon. How embarrassing would it be to have a dragon run him over while his father watched?

Determined to focus, he watched as two blue dragonets approached the clump of remaining Candidates. They were both lovely, he thought, admiring the ocean blue hide of the one against the pale sapphiric blue of the other.

His breath caught in his throat as the oceanic dragonet locked eyes with him. Everything else faded. Suddenly, it was as if he and the dragonet were the only people on the Sands, maybe the only people in the Cavern.

There was no sound, only the beating of his heart, and then a soft, husky voice.

And somehow, without asking, without reason, he _knew_ the dragonet's name. As if the name had been embedded in his consciousness for all his life and was now awakened. A seed finally blossoming.

**Alemeth.**

Bright sunlight and happiness infused his body, showering him with tingling waves of warmth.

Reality snapped back into place as the din of noise in the cavern suddenly washed over him once again.

"Alemeth!" he called to the crowd with pride as he wrapped his arms around his dragon. **_My_ dragon.** It was unbelievable. Incomparable. Surreal.

As he led his dragon off the Sands, he didn't even glance up at his father's livid face. In that moment, there was no one else that mattered. The only opinion that existed was Alemeth's, and Alemeth thought he was enough. Alemeth thought he was worthy.

Worthy.

**I _am_ worthy.**
