Description: Zariah and Lindora meet and eat bread rolls.
Location: Printer Hall
Date: month 3, day 15 of Turn 12
Mentioned:
While dragonriders weren't exactly rare, they still caused excitement
when they came to the Hall. And, they didn't usually come to the
dining hall. Lindora had worked breakfast and lunch, and was just
about to eat a late lunch before helping with dinner preparations when
the woman entered. More out of curiosity than anything else, Lindora
smiled at her. "Want some bread rolls? I just took them out of the
oven."
"Oh, is that what I was smelling?" Zariah asked with a grin, "I'd love
one, if you don't mind. I've managed to miss mealtime at every place
on my route today. I'm positively wasting away. And I will surely
perish without some klah," she seemed familiar enough with the Hall to
know where that was, and made a beeline to fill up a mug for herself.
"Why is yours better than what we have at Dragonsfall?"
Lindora put a few rolls on a plate and brought it, along with her
lunch, to the closest table. "Well, I've never been to Dragonsfall
Weyr. It's even farther away than Dolphin Cove Weyr," which she didn't
imagine she'd ever see again. How strange that distances didn't really
matter to dragonriders. She could hardly imagine what that would be
like. However, wanting to answer the question, she said, "These rolls
have raisins and a little sugar in them, which is nice. Do they have
that at Dragonsfall?"
"Oh, I've seen them, but we don't have too many raisin dishes. The
cooler weather makes it easier to keep the fruits fresh, so it's more
berry muffins then dried raisins." Zariah helped herself to the rolls,
ripping a piece off one and popping it into her mouth. She waited
until she'd finished chewing before she said, "These are good. Is this
what you do then? I've got some siblings in our lower caverns. Maybe
I'll steal your recipe and pass it on," she teased.
"Yes, I bake," Lindora confirmed. "It's a pretty simple recipe. They
could probably recreate it easily. So, your siblings aren't
dragonriders?" She had assumed they would be.
"One of my foster siblings Impressed, but otherwise no. I was the
lucky one getting picked by Relsath. Not that there's anything wrong
with not being a rider," Zariah added hurriedly, "I'm lower caverns
born and bred and my children are fostered with a sister who works in
the kitchens."
Lindora chewed on a roll as she listened. The greenrider's life was so
different from her own, it was fascinating. "Children? How many do you
have?"
"Two. I have a son and a daughter," Zariah said proudly. "They're good
kids. What about you? Do you have family here?"
"I have a daughter," Lindora shared. "She's two, and she's never seen
a dragon from up close. Are your kids older?"
"Raleri is 14 this month. Zerias is 10," Zariah said promptly. "You
should bring your daughter out to meet Relsath some time. She likes
children." It was only partially true. The green liked her children
and was patiently ambivalent towards others.
"I'm sure she'd love that," Lindora said, sure the greenrider was just
being nice. Who knew if they'd even run into one another again. "Did
you come to the Hall to see anyone?" Dragonriders came by fairly
frequently, but usually went to the library or had business with one
of the crafters.
"Oh!" Zariah had the grace to look embarrassed, "I'm sorry. I'm
Zariah. My Relsath and I do the book deliveries. I was just dropping
off the returns and the payments from this month's deliveries. I don't
usually have time to stop in here, but I was dying for a drink, and a
snack, so thank you."
Lindora had never heard of book deliveries. Did dragonriders work for
the Hall delivering books? She was too embarrassed to ask though.
She'd have to ask her brother later. She nodded, pretending she knew
what Zariah was talking about. "No problem. And, I'm Lindora." It was
almost time for her to get back to work, but she was curious. "So, are
you... or were you, a Printer?"
That made Zariah laugh, "No, I was never a Printer. I just needed a
new side job and delivering books is easier than delivering cargo. It
doesn't require any special talents other than the ability to
/between/, and they give me a discount on books. I'm not a Printer,
just an avid reader."
"Interesting," was all she could think to say. Dragons fought Thread.
Picturing them lugging books around was strange, but sounded like it
could be fun. "Well, I need to get back to the kitchens." She stood.
"It was nice meeting you."
