There was a shriek and a resounding splash at the water’s edge.

Three boys streaked away from the lake, dodging into and between the lines of tents in the weyrbowl. They were intent on losing themselves, but not each other, in the crowd. When they'd gotten far enough away from the scene of the “crime,” R'bain finally slowed. Ducking behind a stall he waved the others down. He was still laughing as he caught his breath, and he grinned at his accomplices.

“That’ll show her!” he grinned.

H’taysh’s face hurt from grinning, his stomach aching from laughing so hard. He hadn’t felt this good in ages. Not that he had felt _bad_, exactly -- with Selkirth in his life, everything was great even when it was hard -- but he hadn’t felt really _complete_ as long as it seemed like his friendship had been ruined. He had never really been a vindictive person, but a little revenge on Aydhara had gone a long way towards clearing a part of his heart that he hadn’t realized needed to be cleared.

“She might try to get us back,” he said, but he was still grinning. “And I don’t even care. That was worth it.”

“It was. And she deserved it! She shouldn’t be making up stuff about people. Right?” R’bain met H’taysh’s eyes for confirmation on that last point, suddenly serious for a moment. They hadn’t really talked about it before jumping Aydhara, H’taysh had just been ready to join in, but this _was_ revenge for the rumor she had spread about H’taysh crushing on him. That _was_ all a sharding lie, wasn’t it?

“Right,” H’taysh said, looking back at R’bain resolutely. “Spreading lies just ‘cause she felt like it. And almost costing me a friend.” He has been really torn up about it. Miserable, really, off and on, because he didn’t know how to fix it. But he didn’t want to get too emotional with R’bain -- not now that they might almost be fixed.

And just like that, R’bain was grinning again and pounding H’taysh on the shoulder. “Yeah, well, we sure showed her!” he laughed. “And if she lies some more, we’ll do it again!”

J'cello had veered away from the group, this time to charm someone out of a half-full bottle of wine and a small plate of meatrolls as a victory snack. He caught up with them behind the stall and passed the plate to H'taysh before raising the bottle. "To revenge," he said, his voice full of mischievous cheer, "and to friends who make it worth the risk."

“I’ll eat to that,” said R’bain as he snagged a meatroll. This was turning out to be the best party ever. He still couldn’t believe how satisfying it had felt to watch Aydhara floundering in the water. The look on her face had been priceless.

“Thanks for having my back, guys,” H’taysh said, stuffing a meatroll into his mouth and throwing one arm around R’bain’s shoulders, and one around J’cello’s. “I’ve got more, and better, friends than _she’ll_ ever have!”
