The first few candlemarks of the party were busy for the weyrlings, running messages and escorting visitors around the Weyr. By the time the majority of newcomers to the Weyr had settled the event itself was in full swing, the weyrbowl illuminated by temporary electric lighting. J'cello found himself with a minute of nothing to do and so he did like any weyrling might: grab a couple glasses of wine and weave his way over to another familiar, friendly face.
"Psst, R'bain!" He did not whisper, though raised his extra wine glass and offered it over. "Take a break, we've worked hard tonight."
R’bain had been walking back to the landing zone to get his next transport assignment when J’cello caught him. With a quick look about, he took the glass of wine and ducked between some tents, pulling the other weyrling after him. “I guess a quick break won’t hurt,” he grinned-- before remembering this was J’cello he was speaking with. H’taysh’s new best buddy. “Just us? No Haysh?”
"Last I saw him, Haysh was leading around some boy from Dolphin Cove." J'cello said with an answering grin. "He's cute, too. I might cut in and ask for an introduction. All I've gotten to escort around are stuffy minor holders."
R’bain laughed, though it sounded a bit forced. “Busy with a cute boy, huh? Figures. You seem to be taking this well. …Aren’t you jealous? You two’ve been… real close.” How close, he didn’t know, but he had (wild) suspicions.
J'cello raised his eyebrows in slight confusion. "Jealous? I'm jealous he had the good luck to happen back to the landing area when cute guys needed directions. He probably doesn't even appreciate his luck." He affected a long-suffering sigh. "It's for the best, I guess. Even if he was into it, Bairelth gets upset if I think about touching anyone but her."
Oh. Well now R’bain just felt foolish. He had thought the two greenriders had something going on. They were teaming up on most projects these days and ate together often, but according to J’cello it sounded like there was nothing more there. He should quit while he was ahead and just enjoy the wine and try to find some smalltalk, but he couldn’t help himself. There was a question that had been gnawing at him since Impression: “Has H’taysh mentioned being into it or not? Into other men, I mean.”
J'cello did take a moment to sip his ill-gotten wine. "It's come up." He said evenly. He didn't want to disclose what H'taysh said in confidence, but he also wanted to defend his buddy if he could. "What does it matter? We're all going to have to be somewhat okay with it once the greens start rising."
“It matters because he told me Aydhara was a lying bitch,” R’bain frowned darkly at the memory of the weyrwoman second’s daughter and the rumor she’d spread about Haysh liking him. “I almost went and punched her. I-- I just wanna know who’s been lyin’ to me. Haysh and I were buddies for ages, and then he went and Impressed green and now I don’t know what to think.”
"Well he's definitely not into _you_ like that, I'll tell you that much." J'cello said sternly.
R’bain looked skeptical, but hopeful.
"And Aydhara's full of it. It's probably for the best you didn't punch her, though. She holds her own in sparring classes. Though I bet between the two of us we could manage to throw her in the lake."
“That _would_ be a sweet revenge for her troublemaking.” R’bain actually grinned again, glancing over J’cello to take his measure. “Yeah. I bet we _could_ do it.”
There was a brief moment where J'cello considered being the good influence. He'd said it in jest, and Aydhara was a nuisance but hardly crossed his mind as anything but; but the way R'bain glanced at him had his back straightening. He raised his glass to toast (quietly), "Yeah we can."
