N'kevyn

N'kevyn

Zorenh knew what a man looked like when he was not sure where he was supposed to go. After all, leaders had to keep an eye out for these things so they could help. And this particular man looked lost as a Weyrling with a poor imagination.

Well, maybe that was an exaggeration.

"Can I help you find something?"

N'kevyn turned towards the voice and gave a sheepish grin. "I thought I'd wander around a bit. Perhaps find your dining cavern, but I'm certain I've passed this lamp twice now. Care to point me in the right direction?"

"Would be my pleasure," said Zorenh. "I'll be happy to take you there. What brings you up to the frigid heights?"

"Frigid?" N'kevyn chuckled, "I lived at High Reaches until recently. It's positively toasty here. But today I was just dropping off some records from Barrier Lake. I didn't manage to look busy enough when they were looking for a volunteer so I got sent, but since I'm here I thought I'd poke around. Have you been here long?"

"A few months," said Zorenh. "And it's plenty frigid for me after living down on the coast for so long." He chuckled.

"Coast? Weyr or hold?" the bronzerider asked curiously, wondering if he'd transferred or just had the bad luck to be searched to the cold Weyr.

"Weyr," said Zorenh. "East and west, both. I came here to be near my father." After, of course, he had lost all of his hard-earned minions, but he did not have to admit that.

"Oh, I'm sure your father was thrilled- I know I was when my son chose to move with my weyrmate and I. I was a little worried he'd hate it, but then he went and Impressed the best little dragon at the last hatching," N'kevyn said that with a level of pride that would probably embarrass said son if he heard it, "so I suspect he's here to stay,"

"I got to go out for drinks with him and N'vanik," Zorenh bragged. It had been just about the coolest thing that had ever happened to him. He hoped that it meant R'enh was happy that he decided to move. "I think... I don't want to start over again. So. This is where I'll be for a while, too."

N'kevyn chuckled, though he kept the thought that the boy looked a little too young to be going out for drinks to himself. Maybe he was just getting old. "Valid. I didn't enjoy the move itself. I hope I don't have to do it again any time soon."

"I bet you have a lot more stuff to worry about lugging around!" said Zorenh. People with their own Weyrs had a lot more room to collect things. And in N'kevyn's case, perhaps a lot more time.

"Avicath looked like he was about to fall over from all the boxes strapped to him; just a big bronze barge," N'kevyn agreed with a chuckle. "I didn't get your name. I'm N'kevyn, by the way."

"Oh! Where are my manners? I'm Zorenh, sir. Pleased to make your acquaintance." Zorenh gave his most winning smile and offered his hand to shake. As he always did, he put a little too much weight on the ‘R'enh’ part of his name.

N'kevyn shook the youth's hand readily enough. "Well, Zorenh," he emphasized it the same way, assuming that was how it was pronounced, "thank you for your help, but I should probably let you get back to whatever you were up to. I know candidates can be very busy!"

Zorenh would have much rathered if he could rub elbows with a proper dragonrider for a bit longer, but he understood. He was just a Candidate.

"It was my pleasure, sir."
