Bright and early, Br'elt arrived to Wing practice, jacket slung over one shoulder, a half-grin on his face as he looked at his new Wing. The Weyrleader's Wing! He hadn't expected that assignment but he was excited about it.
It looked like Werreth was already making friends with one of the bronzes, judging by their engaged postures. **New friend?** Br'elt asked Werreth even as he walked over to the other rider and said, "Hi there! Br'elt, Werreth's rider."
There was only a slight hesitation before D'ren smiled. "I'm D'ren, of bronze Menanth. My duty to Werreth." It wasn't a surprise that Menanth was already chatting with the new brown.
"My duty to Menanth," Br'elt replied sunnily. "We just arrived at Barrier Lake the other day. Getting settled in. Have you been here long?"
D'ren thought a moment. "About two Turns. I came here to help with the construction, though I had to wait a while to get the transfer approved because I didn't have relevant skills for the early phase."
"I'm sorry we missed that part! I would have loved to see how a Weyrhold was made," Br'elt replied. "Relevant skills, you said? What's your craft?"
"I'm harper trained, though I don't have much time for it now." Occasionally it cheered D'ren up to play the gitar or dabble in songwriting.
"A harper? That's way cooler a craft than my tanner training," Br'elt said. "I'm good for straps though, if you ever need help with those. Pretty boring otherwise." The brownrider's eyes swept the rest of the Wing for a moment and then he asked D'ren, "So, anything this new kid needs to know about Ash Wing?"
"D'hol is _very_ strict," D'ren warned. "If he's being too hard on you, talk to F'lin or Timassa and they might be able to intervene on your behalf. Those two are more easy-going. K'ran too."
Br'elt nodded. "Got it. No screwing around." Good thing then that C'lest hadn't been assigned to this Wing. Utreth was notorious for being silly when she should be serious. "I can do that. Does the Wing do a lot of stuff together outside of practice? I know some Wings do."
"There's some social activities, yeah." D'ren looked slightly embarrassed. "I don't participate much."
"A little too spicy for your taste?" Br'elt tried to tease lightly.
"Oh," D'ren smiled slightly. "I'm just not very social." He'd never been the type to be surrounded by lots of friends, but he'd been more outgoing when he was younger.
"Hey, no issue there," Br'elt said. "My best friend C'lest, he's like that. He doesn't mind getting dragged along to things but if you gave him his choice, he'd stay home. So what do you like to do in your off time?"
"I practice gitar or work on music here and there. I like to read. What about you?"
"Me? I like being outdoors. Climbing cliffs, swimming, hiking. That stuff. Yeah, most of that is nonexistent with a dragon that can carry you everywhere but I still like doing it. Werreth doesn't mind waiting for me at the top. I think he likes to tease me from up there."
"You'll have lots of chances for swimming here." D'ren gestured toward the lake.
"Yeah, Werreth's excited about that. Surf, sun, and sand are all his jam. He mentioned something about dragons going fishing here though? Are the fish really that big?"
"There are a few large species. It's a big, deep lake."
"Nice!" **Heard that, Werreth? The lake's deep enough for you to fish in. Catch you some lunkers!** There was some signal from D'hol's bronze because all of the dragons went on alert. "Guess that's our cue to get in formation," Br'elt said to D'ren. "Nice to meet you! And thanks for the conversation. Maybe you can show me a song you're working on next time."
That made D'ren feel a flare of self-consciousness. "Maybe." Though he'd shown his work to several people before, it wasn't as if this was a new experience. "It was nice meeting you."
