Location: Barrier Lake Weyr

J'cello nudged H'taysh playfully in the ribs as K'lvin lectured, a shit eating grin on his face. He'd been through enough of these lectures before as a candidate, though they didn't always have the 'be considerate of your holdborn classmates' so obviously tacked on. It was a nice addition, though, as he realized (not for the first time) that so many of his classmates were holder kids that came to Barrier Lake with the promise of work.
Bairelth's sleepy mind tugged gently at his, and he felt brave enough to lean in and whisper conspiratorially to his classmate, "At least our girls are sensible. Unlike these, _ugh_, boys."
The lecture was a test of H’taysh’s resolve. They weren’t supposed to have sex, or even masturbate, or even think too hard about it, but now the Weyrlingmaster _did_ want them to think about it, and it was hard to think about sex without also thinking so much about it that Selkirth would wake with questions.
J’cello’s distraction was a welcome one.
“Selkirth knows what she’s about, at least,” he agreed, whispering back. “Maybe _I_ don’t, but she sure does! Is Bairelth awake? Is this talk bothering her?”
"Nah, she's asleep. She's a little, uh, touchy about it, that's for sure." J'cello continued whispering as if Bairelth wouldn't be able to hear him otherwise. "I was thinking too hard about L'rin's abs. She doesn't want me to touch them. I had to convince her I wasn't, and then tried to tell her that we ask permission before touching people, but that set her off again." He rolled his eyes good naturedly. "I knew the rules were there for a reason, but I figured they were more like guidelines. I guess not for her."
“Huh. Selkirth hasn’t gotten mad… she just kind of dismisses it, like it’s not worth thinking about and I shouldn’t be thinking about it, either,” H’taysh said. “Which I shouldn’t. Been trying not to, but you know…” He shrugged helplessly. “My problems definitely aren’t hers, I guess… and I don’t wanna make them hers, you know?”
"It's hard not to when you know you aren't supposed to." J'cello agreed with a grin. "And when your Weyrlingmaster tells you to think about it. I don't really know how to keep stuff separate from Bairelth yet, so I'm never sure what she's going to catch. But! It's just temporary. She'll be up catching blues before I know it."
“Catching blues?” H’taysh bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing nervously. He had almost forgotten they were still in class. “Doesn’t that go… uh… the other way around?”
"Well yeah, but I don't know what else to call it to make it sound active, y'know? And like any of these blue dinguses are going to be able to catch Bairelth without her approval." J'cello said with a vague gesture at the rest of the class. "Flattery needs to start soon, gentlemen. And lady. I mean, once Bairelth lets me touch abs again."
“Do the greens get a choice? I mean… they can try to, right?” The thought cheered H’taysh a bit. Maybe it meant he’d have at least a little say in who was going to… well. “If they fancy somebody in particular, they can try to give that dragon preference? Even if it doesn’t always go that way?”
"Well, sure!" J'cello said. "Don't tell the boys, obviously. They think it's all about the fastest or the smartest. But if your girl has a crush, or if you do, she might fly a little too close to them and give him a better shot. There's only so much she can do if you're crushing on a bronzerider and a bunch of blues are chasing, though. Bronzes don't win as often as they think they do."
“Huh.” H’taysh considered that for a moment. This was the kind of thing that he wasn’t sure if the Weyrlingmasters would cover… or even understand enough to realize that someone like H’taysh needed to hear it. Surely they would, right…? But the gap between what he was facing, and what they were, seemed so wide. There was J’nic, at least, and surely he would know and understand… but H’taysh just couldn’t bring himself to ask about it yet. Greenriders or no, there was something mortifying about asking a _teacher_ about something that felt so personal.
But J’cello was close to his age, and a weyrling. And weyrbred. With a green dragon. So maybe he knew all the secrets already.
“Can we talk more sometime?” H’taysh asked him. “When we’re _not_ surrounded by… you know…?” He gestured in a way that clearly indicated the room at large. Everyone.
"Well sure. I don't need flattery from you, but I'm happy to receive it. Once Barielth allows it, of course." J'cello said lightly, though his grin settled into a more neutral line as he considered H'taysh's expression. "Oh. Yeah, of course we can. Come over whenever, eh?"
H’taysh’s face reddened. “No flattery! I mean, uh… yeah. Just wanna talk greenrider-to-greenrider, you know? I’ll drop by sometime. Thanks, man.”
"Anytime, buddy."
