Characters: O'dyn
Description: O'dyn moves into his new big boy weyr
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 19 of Turn 11
All of the other weyrlings were excited about today but all O'dyn felt was...a really big word that meant uncertain or fearful or agitated about something that _might_ happen but it was happening today -- in fact it was happening right now -- so maybe it wasn't that word at all, maybe it was another word. He couldn't remember.
He just stood there, on his new ledge, staring into his new weyr, feeling...something.
}: Spacious, :{ Genireth remarked in a pleased tone, surveying the swept clean space. The empty space, O'dyn noted. The _big_ empty space. Bigger than they needed, even if Genireth was still growing. For all of his life, O'dyn had lived in cramped spaces with siblings and family. He had only _just_ started getting used to life at Printer Hall with the other apprentices and hadn't had any time to get used to being in the Candidate Barracks before Impressing and but he had spent the last few months with the other weyrlings in the Barracks and that had been nice because it felt a little like home but with dragons and--
Genireth lowered his head and nudged O'dyn's shoulder, snapping him out of his rambling thoughts. }: You don't like it, :{ the dragon observed.
"No!" the little weyrling said loudly. "It's...it's so _big_. What...what are we going to do with all of this _space_?"
Like an artist deciding what to do with a canvas, Genireth ambled forward, thinking. }: Don't people like to hang pretty things on their walls? Decor, as it's called? We could do that. :{
O'dyn remained rooted at the entrance, clutching his one bag of belongings like a buoy in a big storm that he didn't expect.
Unfazed or unaware, Genireth continued his survey of the space. }: A bookshelf would go well here, :{ he remarked, eyeing one of the blank walls. }: You could fill it with those books you're always talking about. :{ He inspected the table setting and sniffed. }: Two seats. Small but...acceptable. For now. We can revisit a larger one later. :{ He moved toward the bedroom space, nudged the large chest at the foot of the bed. }: Acceptable. You don't have _that_ many clothes. :{ He craned his head. }: Another blanket would be nice. This one looks...worn. :{ He tilted his head. }: But also, not your color, :{ he declared. He swung his head back to look at O'dyn. }: You aren't making a list of all this? :{
O'dyn shook his head tightly. Every bone in his body vibrated with...energy. Some unnamed energy that just seemed to be swelling, filling his chest, up into his throat, pushing into his face--
He burst into tears.
Genireth, with an uncharacteristic squawk of alarm, was instantly beside him, his summer sky wings mantling, his neck and tail spiraling around his little rider, protecting him from everything and anything in that moment.
If only Genireth could protect O'dyn from his own feelings.
"I'm s-s-sorry," he sobbed. "It's just, it's just...s-so b-b-big."
}: It is, :{ Genireth agreed slowly, trying to understand what his little rider was feeling. There was something about the emptiness that bothered O'dyn, as though he would never feel like it was home because it was so big. Genireth lowered his head so that his eye was level with O'dyn's head. The tearful boy could see himself reflected in those worried saffron facets. He reached up to touch Genireth's cheek. }: It is big. But we are together. We will fill this space. Not just with decor but with other things. Memories. Laughter. :{
A pause and then, }: Words. All of the words that you want. :{
O'dyn let out a watery laugh. "B-Big words."
The saffron in the dragon's eyes shifted to spring green. Verdant was the word O'dyn remembered when it came to that color. It wasn't a big word but it was a pretty word. }: Big words, :{ Genireth agreed. }: The biggest that we can find. :{
Another burbling laugh. He stroked Genireth's soft cheek. "We'll n-need a dictionary."
}: I'm certain we can find that and everything else on our list _somewhere_ in this Weyr, :{ Genireth replied.
