He had exactly half a candlemark to eat and then he had to be back for class -- or was it the next feeding time? There was so much going on when it came to the weyrling schedule and O'dyn was doing his best to keep up but Genireth took up a lot of his time and he wanted to make sure he was taking care of his dragon first because it was his _dragon_ and he should absolutely take care of him because Genireth was going to take care of him because that's what a dragon and rider did and--

Wham!

He had turned the corner at full speed -- again -- and had run straight into...

"Oh! Rider M'trel!" he squeaked nervously and happily.

The brownrider smiled welcomingly. "Candidate Ocaridyn. I remember. How are you?"

"Weyrling O'dyn now sir! Blue Genireth's rider!" he replied proudly, standing as tall as he could. His heart swelled in his chest. It felt so good to say he was now a dragonrider!

M'trel's smile turned knowing. Softer. Remembering that own moment within himself when he was able to proclaim that new rank to others. "Genireth's rider. Well, then, I stand amended once again. Well done!" he congratulated the young rider. Barely old enough to Impress it seemed, unless the Candidates were just getting younger while M'trel was getting older.

}: We are not old yet! :{ Noruith remarked indignantly. M'trel's head turned slightly as he felt the dragon drift down to come inspect the conversation personally. He didn't move as those wide, wide wings fanned, that bulk landed gracefully, that large head lowered to scrutinize the weyrling rider.

O'dyn stood very, very still.

"Don't scare him now, Noruith," M'trel said with a chuckle. "He's getting used to dragons rapidly." Noruith made an incomprehensible sound. His faceted eyes whirled a light green.

Suddenly, O'dyn remembered what he had wanted to ask the rider before!

"Their eyes! The colors!" he blurted out. "What do the colors mean?"

"The colors?" M'trel echoed. He leaned against Noruith's head and thought about it a moment. "Well, blues and greens are generally the happy colors. Contentedness, mirth, joy, that sort of thing," he explained, "while yellow means alarm and reds and oranges are more heightened emotions like anger."

O'dyn pondered this. "Does...what does a dragon get angry about?" he asked.

"Thread," M'trel answered simply. And just like that, the light green coloring in Noruith's eyes shifted into a simmering, menacing orange. It brought to mind both sunsets and dragon fire to the little weyrling.

"I guess...that makes sense," he said, mesmerized by the colors. "Dragons hate Thread, they were born to fight it, so it makes sense that they are angry." The orange slowly faded back to a calmer green, like newly sprouted vegetation. "So I can tell what any dragon is feeling now!" O'dyn proclaimed, now satisfied that he knew the answer to his question.

"Indeed you can," M'trel agreed with a chuckle. Weyrlings always reminded him how refreshing curiosity and the quest for knowledge could be. "You'll be far more versed with it with your own dragon though. You won't need to see the colors of his eyes to know. You'll feel it just fine."

O'dyn wasn't sure how to respond to the realization that he would feel someone else's feelings. It felt...weird. But it was Genireth and everything about Genireth was amazing so maybe it wouldn't be so weird? Hm. He looked at M'trel. "Do you think...could I pet your dragon sir? Do you think Genireth will get that big?"

"Yes and no," M'trel answered, and then he realized that he hadn't clarified the response in the best manner. "Yes, you may pet Noruith. No, Genireth won't get as big. But that's okay! A blue dragon needs to be smaller than a brown dragon so that they can zip into those tough spots during Threadfall. There's plenty a time where a blue or green dragon has saved Noruith's bulk with their speed and agility. That will be Genireth's strength."

O'dyn beamed as he gently placed a hand on Noruith's cheek. Genireth was going to be good at something that a brown dragon wasn't! This was great! "Thank you sir!"

"Call me M'trel, please. We're both riders now," the brownrider insisted welcomingly. O'dyn's face lit up more. "Off with you now. You've got a busy schedule as a weyrling. Trust me, I remember. You take good care of your dragon and bring him to meet Noruith when you can."

"I will!" Beaming still, and now down to a quarter of a candlemark left but that was okay, O'dyn raced off to his next destination, feeling as though everything in the world was great!
