N'vanik

N'vanik

Of course they would send him to this frozen wasteland. Somewhere sunny
and warm would have been too nice. N'vanik scowled as he finally found his
way into the dining cavern. It was a bit early for the noon meal and he
was hoping to eat and get out before the cavern filled up. }:This place
will be good for us. You will see!:{ Loseth said confidently.

**I suppose I should make the most of it.** He scanned the area, looking
for an empty table. His eyes settled on a woman with white-blonde hair.
**Who's that?** The woman was attractive and was surprisingly alone, for
the moment at least.

}:That is gold Nyith's rider:{ Loseth supplied.

A goldrider, how interesting. He walked over and sat next to her, a
charming smile already lighting his face. "Hello there, beautiful."

Traelyn looked up at the sound of his voice, and was surpised to find that
he was sitting so very close to her. She leaned back a little so she
could see him better, her eyes flickering to his shoulder knots before
they met his. "Hello there. And who might you be?"

"N'vanik, rider of bronze Loseth." He slightly emphasized 'bronze'.

And she noticed the emphasization. "I haven't seen you around..." Most
of the bronzeriders here had already made sure they were known to
her...which was indeed typical behavior, coming from them. "But maybe
that's because I'm still pretty new here..."

"I just transfered here myself." He smiled again. "The climate isn't to my
liking, but the company might not be so bad."

She tilted her head slightly to the side. "Perhaps not," she smiled.
"The people here are nice, though," she commented thoughtfully, thinking
of the bluerider, N'klar, who had showed up at her weyr just to talk and
make her feel welcome.

'Nice' was a very relative term in N'vanik's eyes. "Haven't had much
chance to meet anyone yet, except the leadership, and you of course."

"Oh, you'll meet the others soon enough." She looked at him. "Where did
you transfer from?" she asked.

"Dream's End." His eyes darkened a bit.

Sensing his change of mood, Traelyn studied him for a brief moment before
turning her attention to her mug of klah. Gathering it in her hands, she
took a sip before asking him carefully, "Did you choose to come here for
any particular reason?"

He took a breath, calming himself. "I didn't choose to come here. I was
sent."

Her eyes flickered to him, but she didn't dare press him for answers. As
a Weyrwoman Second, it was her right to ask those certain questions...but
even still... She allowed for the silence to stretch between them, giving
him the option of either telling her why he was sent, or dropping the
subject completely.

"No point in dwelling on the past." He said, shrugging. "Loseth keeps
insisting this is a good change for us."

"Nyith says the same thing to me too," she smiled. "Our dragons usually
know what is best for us. Sometimes I think that she knows what is better
for me before even I do."

"After all the turns we've been together, you'd think I'd learn to listen
to him. I guess I'm too stubborn even for my dragon. It makes me wonder
why he picked me."

}:Because you were the right one.:{ Loseth said, sending love to his
rider. N'vanik tried to hide his reaction, but knew some of it must have
shown on his face.

A quiet smile curved her lips, for she had seen the look in his eyes.
"The dragons always know..." she quoted the ancient saying before taking
another sip of klah. "I'm sure you're a compliment to him, just as he is
to you."

"So he tells me." N'vanik said. Conversation was not one of his strong
points, but he found he liked talking to this goldrider. "So how about
you, did you choose to come to this frozen . . . place?"

She grinned, noting his brief lapse. "Mmm...it was more my Weyrwoman who
chose for me. A call went out for a 'Second to come here, and my
Weyrwoman at Far Island thought that I was well-qualified for the job.
She told me so, and I agreed to come here."

"So how is your new position treating you?"

"Very well. I've had no difficulties with anything - or anyone. At
least, not yet." She chuckled a little as she looked down at her mug of
klah, swirling it lightly between her hands.

He leaned a little closer to her and said quietly, "Then I guess I should
warn you, I'm a bit of a troublemaker." His eyes danced as he spoke.

One, pale brow rose and she glanced up to meet his eyes. "Oh, are you?"
she asked as a small grin began to lift the corners of her lips. "And do
you plan on causing trouble just to get under my skin and wreck my perfect
record for not yelling at anyone yet?"

"I don't plan on upsetting you, beautiful, but I wouldn't mind getting
under your skin." His food was quite forgotten now.

Even after Turns of being a dragonrider - and a queenrider at that - she
could never seem to get over how forward the bronzeriders were with her.
And after Turns of being a queenrider, she knew how to counter their
remarks. "I'm sure," she grinned, patting his arm gently. "Maybe, if
you're very, very good...we'll see, hmm?"

"We'll see. And maybe you'll find out what you've been missing." Why was
he even bothering? She was part of the leadership, after all.

**What I've been missing, huh?** "Maybe, N'vanik." She gave him a smile
and then gestured to his food. "Maybe you should eat before it gets cold,
hmm?"

"Thanks for reminding me." A hint of irritation crept into his voice.
N'vanik began eating his cooling meal, wondering if he should take it and
leave. What was he expecting, anyway? That she would throw herself at him?
She hadn't rejected him either, only put him off. He still had a chance.
He decided to stay, at least until he was done eating.
