L'rin

Lenorin felt a rush of excitement when the humming started. While he
wasn't confident he would Impress this time around (failure at his
first Hatching had shown him this might take some time) he was feeling
pretty good about his chances. He quickly put on his robe and looked
around the room, assessing the other young men.

He immediately discounted Rabain and Haysh, even though they were
friends. They had never even been Searched. Maybe blues would take
pity on them though. If Impression was fully based on genetics,
Nikhayden would be a shoe-in for a bronze, but luckily someone's
parents didn't determine what color they would Impress, and he heard
some children of dragonriders never Impressed. He was competition
though; as was Myvaras. He liked Videryn and hoped he Impressed a
brown. And, Avradess? He wasn't sure. Maybe a brown. Or, depending on
his sexual preferences, a blue or green.

Everyone was ready and it was time to line up. Lenorin gave his
brother a playful nudge. "Let's do this!" The Clutch was large enough
for there to be several bronzes, so maybe they both would get lucky.

When they got to the Hatching Sands, sticking together, Lenorin
scanned the guests and was able to see their family. There were his
father and stepmother, with their three children. His older brother
wasn't there. His wife had been very pregnant at their last visit and
he wondered if she had just had the baby; although that shouldn't have
stopped him. Maybe some other task had kept him and he was planning on
arriving later. He had made it to the other Hatchings.

Lenorin pointed them out to Arlin but didn't start up a conversation.
He knew how nervous Arlin got, so it wasn't worth trying to draw him
out. There would be plenty of time after the Hatching to either
celebrate or commiserate. And, even if he Impressed and Arlin didn't,
he'd try to find time to console him. Since Arlin was younger, maybe
it would take him another Hatching or two. It didn't even cross his
mind that the opposite might happen.

"Look!" he said to his brother as the first egg cracked. Everyone's
attention focused on the little brown, who soon chose Nikhayden. "At
least it wasn't a bronze," he muttered to himself. That meant less
competition for the bronzes. The strange crafter, Kailis, Impressed a
green and then, to his dismay, Videryn was chosen by a blue. However,
he didn't have time to dwell on this, as several dragonets hatched in
close succession.

A dark brown dragonet, with some lighter streaks on his sides, hatched
and quickly made his way to a cluster of male Candidates. He stumbled
once, but then recovered. He seemed to have more of a stocky build
than some of the other dragonets. When he reached Arlin, Lenorin began
getting excited that his brother would Impress; and a brown would make
his family proud. However, the dragonet moved on from his brother and
took a few extra steps, then sat right in front of him .When they
locked eyes, everything clicked into place.

He heard a voice say }:L'rin, I'm glad I found you. I need something
to eat. Let's go!:{

It was an overwhelming experience. L'rin felt a combination of
complete awe at having Impressed and confusion at the mix of thoughts
and emotions that were bleeding over from his brown; _his_ _brown_.
"Yasanth," he whispered to himself. Then he quickly moved to catch up
to the brown, who was making his way towards the food. He couldn't
believe he had Impressed. And to the most amazing dragon on all of
Pern. He couldn't wait to show him off to everyone.
