It had been a while since she had been held like this, especially
after the long labor of the Lady Holder; she couldn't blame Bryvin, he
had had other things on his mind and had certainly been concerned
about his new infant daughter. But the reduction in his regular
affections since his marriage had left a bit of a strain on her. Now,
feeling her back and hips fitted so snuggly to him, his arm firmly
around his waist, she felt a deep relaxation.
Perhaps it was the wine she'd consumed, or perhaps it was her
conversation with Sophque, but she felt words bubbling up in her
throat, demanding to be spoken. Yriadha tried to swallow them back,
and turned her head slightly, seeing Bryvin's shoulder as the back of
her head lay snug against his neck. His deep, even breathing told her
that he slept; she had made a strong effort and had satisfied him
well. That brought a faint smile to her mouth as she laid her arm
along his around her middle.
Her fingers grazed the skin along his hand and fingers, moving
lightly, not enough to wake him, but enough where she could feel the
texture of his skin against her own. "Damn you." Her voice was soft,
barely a whisper. "I didn't want to feel this. " She swallowed hard
and felt her eyes sting. "I thought to never feel ...this for anyone.
I thought it a silly emotion that only young girls played at." Her
thumbs stroked over his arm and she took a slow breath as she closed
her eyes to try to prevent the sting of tears, but failed.
She kept her voice down to a whisper, speaking more to herself than
the sleeping man beside her. "Why did you not find me when I was
young? Why did I have to find love and feel love when I can do nothing
but hide it?" She felt a hot tear slide down out of her eyes to the
pillow and squeezed her eyes shut as she took a slow breath. "I wish I
could tell you and that it would mean something, but I am not some
wistful, silly child. It can't be more than this and I know it." She
stroked his arm again, feeling suddenly exhausted. "I just..." Her
fingers slid up to his and slid carefully between his own. "I love
you, Bryvin. My Bryvin." Her eyes closed with a shuddering breath as
she snuggled her head deeper into the pillow.
Bryvin's breathing didn't change but his eyes opened and glittered in
the dim light of the fire. It took immense effort not to move or give
any other sign of consciousness. But the times he'd spent aboard ship
had taught him to sleep light. He knew she'd been talking to herself
or rather to him as he regained consciousness. But the words were
engraved in his mind.
They'd probably cost her a great deal to say for he understood her
life and the way her mind worked. That she hadn't told him while she
thought him awake told him they were her true feelings and not a ploy
to manipulate him.
He thought a moment longer and resolved to allow Riadem to live for
she hadn't asked for her son's life as a part of her admission. Then
at some point in the future he might tell her his own feelings. He
closed his eyes again but didn't go directly back to sleep.
She should have slipped out of his arms and returned to her own room
through the private passage, but was loathe to leave the comfort of
his arms. Warm and snug against him, Yriadha began to doze, her
breathing deepening to a deeper sleep. Unconsciously , she pulled his
arm closer, bringing their entwined fingers close to her cheek on the
pillow. Finally, she completely relaxed, all tension gone and her body
slack.
Little by little he felt her relax into sleep. His head tilted forward
as he inhaled her fragrance. A small light appeared in his mind to
alleviate the darkness of the sorrow he felt over Asaille's condition.
So many times she'd been there to help him over the turns and now he
knew why. He smiled.
