Alina

Alina

The Eastmark Lighthouse was quickly becoming one of Alina's favourite reference points for going /between/. It was so picturesque: the tall white lighthouse on dark grey rocks, surrounded by a brilliant blue sea and a luminous green forest. Alina and Imarith took a moment to enjoy the view as they came out from /between/ before beginning their descent.

As usual, the lighthouse keeper Rehaan was standing on the front steps waiting for them. Alina never knew how he knew to expect them. She raised a hand in greeting as Imarith landed and she undid her straps.

"Well met, greenrider." The Starsmith crossed the small lawn to where Imarith crouched. He'd relaxed a lot since their first meetings, gradually becoming friendly enough to scratch Imarith's eyecrests as he passed. "I trust all is well at the Weyr?"

"Thank you, yes." Alina undid her straps and stepped down from her dragon to undo the crate of supplies. "Panitath rose and there will be eggs on the Sands soon, so we are all quite pleased."

He nodded as he moved to help her with the straps. "I'm glad to hear it. And dragonman J'pil? How is he?" He lifted the crate from Imarith and carried it to the entrance to the lighthouse, then returned to carry the other one over. The empty crates from her last visit were stacked neatly by the door, and he carried them back to her along with a messenger tube containing his report.

Alina strapped the empty crates in place but hesitated when she took the messenger tube from him. "J'pil is cleared for light duty but it looks like I'll be keeping this route for a while longer, or at least parts of it."

Rehaan nodded, looking nervous again. "I see."

"I almost forgot to mention, sir. I had a conversation with Journeywoman Onook, and she says your measurements seem to be off. She recommended a recalibration of your barometer and anemometer."

He looked at her blankly for a moment, then nodded. "Ah... Journeywoman Onook...?"

Alina studied him for a moment, waiting for him to respond with a message for Journeywoman Onook. He looked away and raked a hand through his ill-cut, salt-and-peppered hair. "Shall I give her a message from you, sir?" she prompted.

"Ah… I suppose… yes. Tell her yes." Rehaan swallowed thickly and looked away. "Thank you, greenrider."

He seemed so nervous. Alina didn't know what to make of it, but then Rehaan was the oddest of all the Starsmiths she visited. "Of course. I'll see you in a bit earlier than a sevenday, then. The day before Threadfall."

He nodded once, sharply, then retreated to the safety of his lighthouse. Alina put her helmet back on and she and Imarith leapt into the sky, circling once to gain altitude before going back /between/.
