Kustaava entered the bathing cavern. She felt she need good long soak after a busy day in the kitchens. She stopped and blushed when she noticed that the bathing pool was already taken. There were one man and two woman, and they seemed
to have fun.
**Stop being silly, Ava. You try to get into the pants of every cute boy you meet and then you can't have bath in mixed company?** she chided herself and started to undress, slowly and self-conciously.
"Hi, do you mind if I join you or is this private party?" she asked shyly.
"Not at all!" the man replied. "There's always room for one more!"
"Hi, there. I'm Olgana and that's Varnia. Boy, you're thin one, do you eat enough?" the older of the two women said.
"Hi, I'm Kustaava, yes, I eat enough. I'm gained weight since I came here," Ava's reply was bit defensive. She already had Weyrhealer lecturing her about the
subject. The candidate entered the pool and glanced the others. The younger woman had just the kind of amble, lushy figure Ava wished she had, instead of looking like a hay pole.
"I'm K'mai, rider of blue Sebeth," the man introduced himself. He thought she did look rather thin, but she was also tall and seemed young, so it was probably just an awkward phase. "How long have you been at the Weyr?"
"Only two months," Ava answered. She was not able to look directly at him, but kept glancing him at the corners of her eyes. He was quite a bit older than An'dr.
"A Candidate, then?" K'mai guessed. "Where were you searched from?" His hand played lazily along Varnia's back.
"I'm from Jade Harbour hold. And you sir, where do you come from?" Ava answered and dared to ask.
"Right here in the Weyr," the bluerider answered. "Born and raised."
Ava just nodded. She didn't know what to say.
"You seem to be settling in. Plenty of newcomers wouldn't be comfortable enough to join a mixed bath. Especially one with me in it," K'mai winked.
"Well, I can't say I'm all comfortable, but...it's the way of the place and I want to fit in," Ava replied with all the dignity she could muster among her blushing.
"That's a good attitude," Olgana complimented.
"Just don't try _too_ hard to fit in," K'mai shifted in the water. "Make sure you leave enough room to be yourself."
"I am myself, for the fist time. I was never been allowed to me myself at home. I was expected to behave certain way and when I didn't, I got trouble."
"I'm glad you made it here, then. I never understood why Holds and Halls feel the need to put so many restrictions on people." K'mai shrugged. "Weyr life is the best life."
"I agree," Ava chuckled.
K'mai grinned. "Good for you! You'll make a fine dragonrider!"
"I do hope so, the other option is to get married and start having babies after babies..." Ava said.
"No, no! You can't do that. You'll stay right here and learn to enjoy all the benefits of weyrlife."
"Maybe you could teach me," Ava said, watching from under her eyelashes.
Varnia suddenly laughed.
"What's so funny?" K'mai asked, turning to her.
"Watch out, K'mai. After she grows up some more and learns, she'll sweep the floor with you" the greenrider said teasingly. She looked at Ava. "I believe we
are kindred sprits."
The bluerider grinned. "I hope she's right."
"I'm always right," the greenrider said smugly.
Ava hid her blush by scrubbing her face, more throughly than it needed.
K'mai laughed and pulled Varnia closer to him for a kiss. Then he turned toward the candidate. "I look forward to teaching you, Kustaava. You just let me know when you want to learn."
"I don't have anything tonight," Ava said after a nervous swallow. "Or are you already taken?" she gave Varnia a glance.
Varnia's lips curled into a mischievous smile and she pushed the bluerider towards the candidate. "You can borrow him. Olgana and I can find other company."
"Well, since everyone seems agreeable," K'mai slid beside Kustaava, "I'm all yours."
"How about dinner? I'm quite hungry," Ava suggested. His closeness was intoxicating and making her dizzy.
"Sounds great. Your weyr or mine?" He moved just a bit closer to her.
"I live in the candidate barracks, no privacy there. So it's your weyr," Ava giggled. She turned to give him a tentative kiss.
The question was so automatic to him that he hadn't even realized his mistake.
He smiled at the kiss. "Then let's go, my bold little candidate."
"All right!" Ava sounded excited.
