Saidrene's legs still felt numb as she walked out of the infirmary. When her cycle had been late she had not thought anything of it, she had never been one of those women to have "regular" cycles anyway, but when it had closed in on nearly two months without having one, she had begun to worry.
Pregnant. That was what Journeywoman Zehva, with those solemn blue eyes, had said.
The idea of having a child wasn't entirely repulsive to the greenrider, but when Zehva had made the calculations to determine how far along she was, some horrible realizations had begun to slide into place.
According to Zehva, Saidrene would have had to conceive at the end of the twelfth month or at the very beginning of the thirteenth month. J'ackt had won Ashareth's flight at the end of month twelve and she had been seeing K'ran romantically all through month thirteen.
There was no way to know if the baby had been fathered by J'ackt or K'ran. The possibility that the baby was K'ran's was exciting and frightening at the same time. They had agreed to just date and see where things took them, and K'ran had requested that she be patient with him while he figured out how he felt. What if the bronzerider, almost twenty Turns her senior, decided that a baby with her was not what he wanted? That she was just a passing bit of romance between the furs?
K'ran didn't seem the type to do those things, but it was still a fear that Saidrene could not shake.
The thought that J'ackt could be the father of her child was frightening and enough to make her feel like she should sit down before her knees gave out. She had been pregnant with his child once before, Turns ago, when she was a Candidate. Her mother had convinced her to abort it so that she didn't ruin her chances to Impress. J'ackt had also been relieved, later when he found out, since he had no desire to be a father.
He would be livid, she was sure, and the thought of telling him made her want to throw up. **He'll hate me. He'll hate me for keeping it.** But she couldn't get rid of it, not this time, it had nearly broken her to do it the first time. There was also the very real chance it was K'ran's, and she would not abort K'ran's baby for J'ackt's sensitive temper.
Exhaling deeply to help calm her nerves, Saidrene pushed away from the wall where she had stopped and turned in the direction of K'ran's weyr. She would tell him first. There was no way she could continue to see him, knowing she might be pregnant with his child, and not tell him.
As she was on the path to the Lord Weyrholder's quarters, a scream reverberated through the air, and then the delicious wash of lust swept through her. A gold was rising!
**Who...**
}:Riyanth.:{ Ashareth supplied, who was lazying on her weyrlege, tail draped over her snout as if she hadn't a care in the world.
A gold flight. Rogueth would surely chase.
}:He is.:{ The green confirmed.
Something in the air caught her attention.
Another gold in the skies!
Ashareth's head swung around, her attention focusing now on the second gold. }:It's Aglayath.:{
Saidrene's brow furrowed, Aglayath appeared riderless. Was she staying at the Weyrhold? One of the first things they had learned about mating flights as Weyrlings was that goldriders always took their dragons out of the Weyr when another gold was rising.
}:Rogueth is trying to get her to leave.:{ Ashareth reported, watching the commotion in the sky. }:They've gone /between/.:{ The green put her head back down and put her tail back over her muzzle, resuming her lounging posture.
A trickle of relief went down Saidrene's spine. If Aglayath was gone she could not cause trouble with Riyanth. But what did that mean for Rogueth? Was he out of the gold flight?
Unsure of what this turn of events meant for K'ran, Saidrene turned and retreated back to her weyr to await the end of the mating flight. Perhaps telling K'ran she was pregnant could wait....
