T'lat slid down from Faucheth's back full of excitement and asked her
to contact the Weyrleader to see if he had time to see them.
}:Erdenth, mine needs to see you if you have time.:{ she relayed
faithfully but her mind voice was full of the excitement her rider was
feeling.
}:Tell your rider to give mine quarter of a candlemark to finish
something, and then he should come to my office,:{ was the message that
Erdenth relayed after a moment or two.
"Come on," he said to L'keri. "Let's get cleaned up, The Weyrleader can
see us in a quarter candlemark."
K'reyel put the last of the hides he'd been annotating into a binder,
ready for the harpers to take to the archives. Just as he closed it, a
knock sounded at the door.
T'lat's hair was still damp but he was all cleaned up by the time he
got to the Weyrleaders office. "Sir," he said as he came in the door.
He could hardly contain himself and blurted out. "I think we've found
the place for the new Weyr you told us about."
K'reyel gestured to a seat. "Are you sure?" he asked of the young man.
"I know you know how important it is. So you do need to be sure."
L'keri followed the greenrider in with more caution, since being in the
Weyrleader's office did not have good associations for him. He almost
wished they'd gone to D'ale or Jaylene first. But his wingmate's
enthusiasm about their find was infectious. "It'd be a good place to
live, sir," he confirmed. "There are caves, warm and dry, and a cove for
dragons to bathe. Rhalith liked it."
"We saw an old Uncle who said we should come back with torches and
glows to really explore. It's an old mine and looks like it's been
abandoned for awhile. But sir, it was warm inside and the air was
fresh but moist. We could hear running water."
"I see," K'reyel reached for a slate, and clipped a hide to it, offering
it to the young man along with a pen. "Could you sketch it perhaps? And
ask your dragon to share it with Erdenth and Chioneth. It doesn't matter
how rough it is, " K'reyel said. "I just want to get an idea of the area
that I can show to the Weyrwoman."
"Sure," T'lat began to draw and asked Faucheth to share her picture of
the cove to both Erdenth and Chioneth. He drew the small settlement on
the north rim and the cave entrances he remembered. "Here," he said
passing the slate back to the Weyrleader. "There was a small Hold to
the west as well."
"How far away?" asked K'reyel. "Would you have to fly there, or could a
man get there on horseback?"
T'lat shrugged. "Well, from here you'd have to fly since it's on the
other side of the mountains. On the opposite side of the lake from
Garnet Valley Hold. But from the cove to the small hold is just a
healthy walk."
"Okay," K'reyel said. "Are you both willing to speak to the Weyrwoman
about this?"
T'lat nodded perhaps a little too enthusiastically. He found the new
site fascinating in its possibilities and significantly warmer than
Dragonsfall.
"Ah, yes, of course." L'keri looked slightly embarrassed, remembering
the last time he'd encountered the Weyrwoman. But perhaps this was a
good opportunity to prove he wasn't a complete idiot. "Should we go to
see her now, sir?"
"See if she is available first, but I'm sure she will be for this,"
K'reyel advised.
"Yes, Weyrleader." The brownrider spoke silently to Rhalith, asking him
to find out if Chioneth's rider could see them. Having passed on the
message, he smiled, feeling T'lat's infectious enthusiasm for the
lakeside location. "It's a good place, sir. Our dragons liked it, and
that matters."
"Yes sir," T'lat nodded with the same enthusiasm over the place they'd
found.
"Then I'll let you show this to her. Good work gentlemen."
"Yes sir," T'lat couldn't help grinning as he stood. "Thank you sir."
