Wilvar plopped down at a table in the Dining Hall, his face set in a
scowl as he stabbed at his slice of roast wherry. He was still
smarting after his visit to the infirmary, and not just because of his
stitches, either. He resisted rubbing his groin at the memory, and
when his older brother sat across from him, his expression never
altered.
"Wha's the matter with you?" Alvar asked with a furrow of his brow as
he plopped down opposite of Wilvar. He could tell from the set of his
brother's mouth and the way he was spearing his food that he was
agitated.
"Just came from the infirmary, that's what. You'd think," he said
before irritably slicing off a piece of the roast, "that having your
appendix removed would get you a little sympathy. But not from Urlene.
The woman's sharding gorgeous, so when junior me decided to pop up, I
thought it was a compliment." He shoved the piece of wherry in his
mouth, chewed quickly and swallowed. "She...she thumped me!"
Alvar nearly choked on the piece of wherry he was chewing, eyes
streaming tears as he guffawed in laughter and pounded the table with
his hand. "Whoowee, son! I'd heard that she was a thumper!"
"It's not sharding funny! It fecking hurt!" Wilvar threw a piece of
tuber at his brother, aiming for his face. "And it's not like I was
trying to offend her. It was a compliment!"
Alvar picked the stray piece of tuber up out of his lap where it had
fallen after colliding with his face. "Oh, that's funny, brother. Maybe
you're not her type," he said, chomping down on a piece of green
vegetable real arrogantly, "maybe she's looking for someone manlier.
Like me."
That brought a snort. "I've never seen her with a man. Even in the
bathing chambers, and trust me, I've looked." Wilvar slumped, then
turned behind him and nudged the man with brown knots who sat at
another table. "Hey, G'nul, you ever seen Urlene with a man?"
G'nul paused from his eating and looked over his shoulder. He snorted.
"Nah. She's a cold fish, Candidate. Don't waste your time. Or mine."
He went back to his meal, showing the young man his back.
Wilvar turned back around and leaned across to speak in a lower tone.
"You ever see her with anyone?"
Alvar scratched his head as he thought about it. "The only person I
ever seen her with out of the infirmary is the Headwoman. And you can
forget that one, too. I ain't ever seen her with a man either, and
she's always in them long skirts."
"They both wear them long skirts." He dropped his voice and his eyes
widened. "Do you think they're...you know..."
"Virgins?" Alvar asked stupidly.
"No you, wher-brain. They was both married from what I heard; you
think their men didn't plow those fields the first chance they got?"
He nudged his brother's arm. "They're like male greenriders, Alvar.
But with women. They're together. They gotta be."
Alvar's mouth made a perfect 'O' and his eyes bulged a bit. "You
think? I mean, I know the Weyr don't care about that an everything
but... They was both married to men, like you said."
"So? They don't got husbands now and don't you think if they was
paired up with anyone that we woulda heard about it or at least seen
it? And do you remember the rumors about why Ofrew divorced his
wife?" He whispered. "I heard she was with another other woman and he
caught her at it, then divorced her cause she wouldn't let him join
in. Maybe that's what happened to them and they're _together_ now."
"Well, the Headwoman did go off to the Dolphin Hall to get herself a
baby, and you know there's plenty of men around here would have been
willing to plant one in her if she'd asked." Alvar's voice dipped
lower as a server walked behind him. He didn't want one of them
running back to the Headwoman telling her what they'd been talking
about. "Bet they got that kid so they could raise it together."
"It makes sense." WIlvar didn't bother dropping his voice lower. He
was certain that he was right. Why else would women who looked like
they did not have men? "That's why she's a thumper, man. Cause she
don't like our juniors. Or any man's. And women want babies so you're
probably right. They're gonna raise it together."
"I'll make real sure not to ever get Urlene for a healer then," Alvar
squirmed in his seat. "I don't want to get thumped."
Seeming to think, Wilvar's eyes widened and a sly grin spread over his
face. "Just think man...the two of them together." He waggled his
brows. "Naked. Try not to think about _that_ when you're in the
infirmary."
"Thanks a lot. There's no way I won't be able to think about that
now." He shook his head trying to clear the image, but it was seared
into his brain. Alvar doubted he would ever be able to look Chaysea in
the eyes again.
Wilvar grinned, but he too would have that thought seared into his
mind. "Now just think of both of them and _you_." **Or me,** he
thought wistfully, his imagination working.
