Ranni

Ranni

"It's a pleasure to meet you. I am Meysa," the spritely redhead beamed at Ranni as she led her back to a small examination curtain in the infirmary. "The Headwoman says that you're a new Candidate. We just need to get a physical and start a chart for you. Make sure your not pregnant, and all of the normal routine stuff."

"Pregnant?" The word burst out of Ranni, her eyebrows raising.

"Yes," Meysa said, seemingly unphased by the Candidate's bewilderment. "We don't allow pregnant Candidates to Stand. It simply wouldn't be practical at all for a pregnant Weyrling to try and take care of a dragonet and a baby. Hatchings can also be dangerous and there is no need to endanger two lives unnecessarily."

"Oh," Ranni felt suddenly nervous. Not because she might be pregnant, there was no chance of that. She'd seen what men did to women in the Holds and she wanted no part of that or having a child. Even as a drudge she had managed to keep men away from her and she had no thoughts of letting one close now. She was nervous because she knew that Meysa was going to want to inspect her without her clothes on.

"Okay, darling, just take your clothes off, put this gown on and then I will be right back and we can get started." Meysa handed her a folded piece of cloth and then left, snapping the curtain shut tightly behind her as she did.

Ranni's fingers trembled as she unfolded the cloth and held it up quizzically. It didn't have a back! How was she supposed to close it? **With these two tiny strings?** Her whole butt would be on display!

Despite her misgivings, the former drudge undressed quickly, loath to take off the new clothes that had been given to her by the Headwoman, and put on the gown. Fortunately, it was so large on her small frame that she was able to wrap it around herself, covering her backside, before tying the strings into place. Pleased with the solution to the gown's obvious dysfunction, Ranni took a seat on the examination table.

"All done in there?" Meysa's voice bounced over the top of the curtain before she whipped it aside. "Now, I'm just going to ask a few questions before we get started." She balanced her clipboard against her hip, pencil in hand. "Have you been sexually active within the past two months?"

"No." Ranni said forcefully.

Meysa continued without faltering, "When was the start of your last cycle?"

"Um," Ranni's eyes looked upward as she counted on her fingers. "A fortnight ago."

"Everything went as normal?"

The Candidate's cheeks warmed a bit at such a personal question. "Yes."

"From as early as you remember, have you had any chronic sort of illnesses?"

"Chronic?"

Meysa tilted her head to the side, "Re-occurring, or persisting."

"No, ma'am."

"Broken bones, fractures, sprains?"

"No, ma'am."

Meysa marked a few things down on the chart. "Okay then, let's get your weight, height, and vitals."

By the time Meysa had finished with all of her odd questions and listening to Ranni's heart, and measuring her height, and charting down her weight, Ranni was beginning to think that the physical would never end.

"Well, you seem to be very healthy, if not a little on the skinny side," Meysa smiled. "It wouldn't hurt you to have an extra roll or meatpie at dinner," she chided. "I am going to get you some teas and you should start drinking them regularly, they prevent pregnancies. Now, just because you have the teas doesn't mean you can be sexually active during Candidacy, it's against the rules and could get you disqualified to Stand. Are we clear?"

Ranni's eyebrows furrowed, "Crystal." She had no intentions of having sex, period, so it wouldn't be a problem.

"Excellent. You can put your clothes back on while I grab the teas." Meysa left the examination area, once again snapping the curtain back and forth into place.

**Does she ever slow down?** Ranni wondered, but then found that she moved quickly herself as she stripped down and put her new clothes back on. No sooner had she slipped her belt into place than Meysa was appearing through the curtain again.

"Drink the teas every night. Even if you don't plan on having sex, it's just a good precaution. Gold flights happen around the Weyr and people lose all good sense sometimes." Meysa admitted with a wink.

Ranni's eyebrows shot up again. "They do? Is that preventable?"

"Well," Meysa said practically, "the best thing to do when the golds rise, if you want to avoid phsycial contact, is to just go somewhere alone. Not everyone loses their minds, most of us who have lived at the Weyr for a long time can handle it just fine. But you've never experienced it, so it's best to be prepared."

Now there was a new worry blossoming in the back of her mind. What if she was grabbed up by some lust filled dragonrider? She cringed at the thought. No, she would make certain she was quite alone should a gold ever rise.

"Thank you for your time, ma'am," Ranni bobbed her head and took the teas.

"You're welcome. I'll send a report to the Weyrlingstaff to let them know you are cleared for Standing."
