Description: Jeyme goes to talk to A'kades about wing transfers but leaves him with something to consider.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 2 of Turn 9
Jeyme had a file tucked under her arm as she left the tiny corner space
that she called an 'office' and walked toward the bigger offices
afforded to the Wingleaders and Wingseconds. Stopping in front of
A'kades' door, she knocked and rocked back on her heels, hoping that he
was in.
"Come in," the bronzerider called. When he saw who it was, his eyebrows
raised in surprise. "Jeyme, how are you?"
"I am okay, how have you been?" she asked as she came into his office,
shut the door, and took a seat in one of the chairs across from him.
"Things have been good," he said. "How are the new riders settling into
your wing?"
"I've paired our new ones up with some veteran wingriders who are
helping them get settled, and hopefully not corrupt them too much."
Jeyme grinned since it was no secret that things had been turbulent in
her Wing. "I apologize for dropping by unannounced. I do have some
transfer requests, wanting to switch from Rapids to Hurricane. I know, I
could have just sent the hidework, but I've been in my tiny office all
morning." She slid the file across his desk.
"You wanted to stretch your legs? I don't mind. Here's some klah if you
want some," he added, gesturing at a pot.
"How many of them do you actually want to lose and think would fit in?"
he added, knowing a lot of riders just wanted the prestige of the
Weyrleader's Wing and overestimated themselves. Of course, Rapids had
once held the esteemed position.
"What? You don't want to just take all of our troublemakers?" she teased
as she stood and poured herself a cup.
He laughed. "As much as I'm sure it would make your life easier, not
really."
Jeyme returned to her seat, crossing one leg over the other, "Well to
cut to the chase then, the first three are actual contenders, the bottom
two requests I put in there just so I could look at the riders with a
straight face when I tell them that I 'tried'."
"Well, should I reject those first?" he said with a laugh. "What have
they done wrong?"
"Well, T'ket nearly decked a fellow rider," she said, lifting her
eyebrows a bit as a smile played across her face, "and B'lami accused
K'ran of playing favorites between River Bluff and Dolphin Cove
riders."
"So now B'lami wants to be in any other wing, and he thinks the
Weyrleader's wing will show them all?" A'kades guessed.
"Something like that," Jeyme agreed with an amused grin. "But what
would I know? One of the wingriders said he had underwear longer than
I had been riding, so."
"That's rude," A'kades said. "Well, let's reject him on the grounds of
that then. T'ket...Well, tell me if any of the others are any good."
"D'lan and M'var are both solid riders. T'ket is a great wingrider,
aside from the one incident. He and Selyna just happen to mix like oil
and water." Jeyme brought her cup of klah up.
"If he's solid otherwise, do you want to pass him off? Or are you and
the Wingleader working on exercises to make them play nice?"
"We have been forcing some team building exercises on them, but
honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing him go. He's talented enough for your
Wing, and with him gone it'll take some of the tension out of ours."
"I'll talk to N'vanik about giving him a shot," he said. "What about D'lan?"
She tilted her head, "We would hate to lose him, actually. He's one of
those rare, hardworking wingriders that never grumbles or complains.
But we don't want to hold him back because he's doing his job so
well."
"If you need a replacement, I could trade you someone sensible like
R'ven. Or you could take on a problem project for me."
"I'm all ears," she said.
"Z'lon and Talerath," he said. "They're good fliers. He's got some
conduct issues, I think the thought was the Weyrleader's wing and
being around mature experienced riders would calm his head some. But
our style just isn't clicking with him, he conflicts too much with
sharp authority. I was thinking K'ran's more laid-back style might be
able to work something with him I can't."
Jeyme nodded as she listened to his assessment of Z'lon, "I'd have to
run it by K'ran, of course, but I don't think he would mind. Rapids
could really use another bronze."
"Rapids is a bit light on them and Hurricane's too sharding heavy.
They all think they're going to be Weyrleader next," he said, laughing
slightly.
"Yeah, I hear that is the problem with bronzeriders," she winked teasingly.
He pressed a hand to his chest and looked wounded. "You've called me
out. All of us out."
Jeyme's eyes gleamed mischievously, "I've had my experience with
bronzeriders. I know how you lot work."
"All of us want to be at the higher wings and claim that prize when
offered. Or, at least, our dragons do," he amended. "I'm content where
I am, as the second who steps in when needed."
The greenrider wondered if that were true. So many of the bronzeriders
around Dolphin Cove seemed hypnotized by the goldriders. "The
Weyrsecond's not a bad spot. Lots of rank and privilege," she teased,
"but without the big headaches of the Weyrleader."
"That's what I think. Being the Second has a lot of responsibilities
and advantages but it's not your call in the end," he agreed. "It's
comfortable enough here."
"Well, I've probably taken up enough of your time," Jeyme said,
stretching a little as she stood.
"It wasn't a burden at all," A'kades said, watching her rise. "My
office door is always open for wing business, and I know you'll be the
most pleasant person to speak to today."
"Well, if you need pleasant company for dinner too you know where to
find me," she winked at him over her shoulder as she left the office.
For dinner, huh? A'kades stopped and considered that, wondered if it
meant what it seemed. It had been some time since he'd been invited
out to dinner by a woman. Usually, he took his meal with old friends or
wingmates. Well, it was something to consider...
