She was flushed as she came into the weyr, her cheeks stained from the
chill wind of between. Lanniya's face was set in an expression of
concentration as she set down her pack, her mind running through her
visit with Pierka. Her sister looked so happy and so...glow-ey. She
had to wonder if there was something she was missing. Not that she
wasn't happy. She was.
But that scare a few sevendays after her goodbye with F'lin that she
hadn't thought about made her wonder. She hadn't told anyone about
that. She hadn't known about it either until the cramps. But she had
told herself it was for the best and had stuck to her teas since. But
maybe if it hadn't happened...would she be as happy as Pierka now? She
plopped down on the chair with a deeper frown.
K'ale hummed as he came into the weyr a few moments later, "Imalkyth
told me you were back, How was..." he smiled but then he took in her
slumped figure and the look on her face. "What's wrong? Is your sister
alright?"
Lanniya looked up as he entered and greeted him with a smile that was
a bit distracted. "Oh, Pierka's great. Really round and really happy.
I'm just...thinking."
He came and sat next to her and reached for her hand. "Whatcha
thinking," he asked. "You don't usually make a frowny face when you're
thinking."
"Well..." She took his hand as her gaze remained distant with her
thoughts. "Do you want babies?"
He looked at her a bit confused. "Is this a trick question?"
She blinked and finally looked at him. "No. I'm serious."
"Well, um yes... but I hadn't really thought about it." His eyes
opened wider with hope, "Are you..."
"No." She shook her head and squeezed his hand. "I'm sorry, but I'm
not." She sighed. "I've been taking the teas. Seeing Pierka so happy
though...it makes me wonder."
"Oh," he said and then reached out to put his arms around her. "I'm
ready when you are."
She leaned into him, but her brow remained furrowed in thought. "I
mean, I'm not sure I'm ready, but I'm not sure I'm not, you know?
Pierka...she had her baby young and she's happy, but I've got a lot
more responsibilities than she does. And I'm new here. But I wonder if
I'd be a good mom too. I know you'd be a good dad." She chewed on her
bottom lip. "Tell me what you think."
"You're right sweetheart," he said softly. "You have a very big job
ahead of you but at some point you'll want to. When that happens I'll
still be here. In the meantime, we can practice." He waggled his
eyebrows at her in a mock lear.
She gave a small laugh. "I thought we had been practicing." They had.
Alot. And she had learned quite a bit from him too. Their bedchamber
was never boring. "Well...what if I decide I never want any?"
"Weeeellll," he gave a deep and regretful sigh. "In that case, I'll
just have to find another flame-haired young gold rider to weyrmate."
he tried to protect his ribs from a poke he figured was incoming.
""Hey!" She didn't poke him, instead smacking at his chest. She rose
from her chair and put her hands on her slim hips, tapping her foot
with mock severity, finally pulled from the seriousness of her
thoughts. "I'm the only redheaded goldrider around, so you're stuck
with me."
"Don't threaten me with what I want!" he stood over her in mock anger.
Her chin lifted in, but there was laughter in her eyes. "I can if I
want to cause _I_ am a goldrider." She flipped her hair back from her
shoulders in a gesture of pretend arrogance." And _you_ have to listen
to me. " Her playful smug smile was ruined by the stuck out tongue.
"Ha. I outrank you."
"Do you?" He asked with a knowing nod. "Maybe, but I can tickle you
into submission."
She took a step back, holding out a pointed finger. "Don't you
dare..." She took another step, then bolted.
He immediately gave chase slapping his thighs with open palms to add
to the drama. "I'll catch you," he mimed Imalkyth chasing. "Oh
beautiful goldrider, I will give you eggs."
She burst out with giggles and darted around the chair, eyes
sparkling. "You've got to catch me first!" She dodged to the side,
slipping past him. "Too slow!"
He chased her into their sleeping room and across the bed where he got
tangled up in the furs. "No fair using clouds," he complained.
She knelt on the edge of the bed and poked at him. "If you want to
catch a gold, maybe you should learn how to play in the clouds." She
grinned and fluttered her lashes.
He laughed and grabbed at her poking hand intending to pull her into
his arms and kiss her thoroughly.
"You sneak!" She answered the kiss readily, a smile staying on her
mouth. When she finally pulled away, face flushed, she threaded her
fingers through his hair. "Is Imalkyth going to chase Anaeryth when
it's her time?"
"Of course," he smiled. And he hoped he'd win her flight but he knew
the chances were very slim. Yes, he'd caught gold before but that was
before the influx of other wings and the censure he'd received when it
was perceived that he'd "ruined' a hatching with only seventeen eggs.
But both Imalkyth and Onnyth had been young at the time and he was
proud of his lifemate.
"Good." She attempted to snuggle and tugged at the blankets when they
got in the way. Lanniya's eyes glinted with mischief. "Cause...I want
to know what you're like in a Flight."
He pulled the blanket around them both and wrapped her in his long
arms. "That would be wonderful."
