"Hssst." Grenval waited in the shadows as the blond girl approached,
then stepped out as she glanced around and waved at him. "Are you
Grenval?" Her voice was quiet, but sounded almost excited.
He warily stepped out, but only after making sure that no one else was
in the hallway. "Yeah."
Jerinne stared at the young man, impressed by his size and the quiet
way he moved. He was perfect! When her friend had sent her that
message about the boy she was enamored with and that he needed help,
she hadn't imagined that Grenval might actually be able to succeed,
but with his bulk, he might just be able to do it. A long curdling
resentment roiled in her belly and she thought with glee that she
might finally get some justice of her own. "Ennali said you needed
help."
Grenval nodded slowly. "Why are you helping?"
She had tried everything. Rumors didn't seem to effect anything. She'd
even tried to sneak into his weyr and cut his straps, but even that
hadn't worked. He'd caught it and the next day, he requested new ones,
thinking they were too old. And he was always with some _girl_! It was
like she had never existed to him. Well, he'd pay. He'd pay for the
baby she lost and he'd pay for the horrible way he'd rejected her. But
Grenval didn't have to know that. "He raped me," she lied with a hiss,
knowing that would stoke the holder's anger even further. "He's
horrible and violent and they protect him."
Grenval's hands tightened into fists. It was like he suspected and
everything he'd heard about the rider. "I'll take care of him. For you
and my father." His message would be loud and clear.
Pasting on a sad expression, Jerinne nodded. "Ennali told me about
your father. He should have never been allowed to get away with
hurting him like that."
Grenval's expression hardened. His father, Cronfur, once proud and
strong, had never really recovered from the vicious assault. He'd lost
his teeth, the use of his arm, and his position. The blows to his
pride and esteem had been too much for him to bear. Now his mother was
alone. "Can you bring him to me?"
Jerinne slowly nodded. "Yes. I know how." A hidden smile glimmered
around her mouth. She'd never be suspected. It would be perfect. But
just in case... She suddenly looked afraid and backed way, appearing
as though she was having second thoughts. "What if you get caught?"
Grenval shook his head. "I promise I'll protect you." He awkwardly
reached and patted her shoulder.
She made her eyes soften. "Thank you." Perfect. "Wait here. It
shouldn't take too terribly long." She darted away on slippered feet.
Grenval stepped back into the shadow and drew out his "message",
testing his thumb on the keen edge. One good stick. That's all he
needed. Then his father and that poor girl would have justice. He'd be
a hero.
