I Don't Know You

Writers: Miriah
Date Posted: 26th February 2019

Characters: Grevan
Description: Grevan comes to Dolphin Cove to deliver an important message.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 27 of Turn 9

As the tithe train approached the large outer doors, Grevan, tried
not to gape; he'd never seen the Weyr before, though he'd heard
stories from those who had returned from the trains such as this one.
Shards, it was huge. How was he ever supposed to find who he was
looking for? One person out of so many...it seemed an impossible
task, but his message had to be delivered.

Nerves threatened to undo him, but the memories of his family, what
they had been through steeled him when doubts began to filter through
to conscious thoughts. It was no small matter he was attempting,
delivering this singular message to a dragonrider, to _that_
dragonrider, wasn't going to be easy. He was settled in his course; he
was here to do his duty and by Faranth, he'd do it!

"Easy, boy." There was a low growl beside him. "You look strung as
tight as a bow string. You go in there looking like that and you'll
never get through."
Grevan looked at the tithe guard beside him and made a visible effort
to relax his shoulders and arms. The guard nodded in approval. "Now
you listen. We'll get in, and get met by the Headwoman, Chaysea.
She'll inspect everything, every box. We'll be offered hospitality for
the evening; it would be suspicious if we turned her down. You need to
be out of sight before she gets to us, hear me?"

Grevan nodded. "I know."

"Don't let no one see you, boy." The guard was firm. "You get caught,
I don't know you. Get done what you have to and get back to me. I'll
get you out as quick as I can, but not if you're stupid. Not if you
get caught. That happens, and I can't protect you or your family, get
me?"

The young man nodded solemnly, but his jaw firmed with determination.
"I understand."

The guard discretely passed him a map. "This'll get you to the
weyrbowl. There are marks on storage rooms that you can hide in until
a candlemark after dawn. We won't wait for you. You're not here, we
leave you." The guard frowned. "Don't show the bloody thing off,
Grevan. Keep it down."

Grevan did as instructed, using the bulk of the wagon to hide his
perusal of the map. He studied it carefully, trying to ignore the
pounding of his heart as the fruition of his goal came ever closer.

"You know what the he looks like?" The guard asked quietly.

Grevan's remembered every detail of the description given to him. "Oh, yes."

"How are you going to get to him? You don't have a lot of time and
it's not as though you can just walk up to him in the middle of the
weyrbowl."

"I'm not stupid." Grevan shot back. That would be the last place they
needed to meet. Besides, he had a contact that had agreed to assist,
but he'd not let the guard in on that. The less he knew, the better.
"I've got a plan."

"I hope so. But remember..."

"I know. You don't know me."

As they approached the Weyr, Grevan watched the massive doors swing
open and he once again felt the pounding of his heart. As the wagons
slowly trailed in, he slowed his pace, walking slightly behind the
guard and using him as a shield from any wandering eyes. Luckily, it
seemed most of the focus was on the wagons and what they bore.

The doors shut behind him and in the moment of darkness before eyes
adjusted to the glows, Grevan darted away, unseen into a nearby
passage.
