Description: Kapera checks on Lanniya before she leaves
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 15 of Turn 9
Kapera had Riyanth ask Anaeryth if Lanniya was free. When she got the
confirmation it was okay for them to stop by, the goldrider drifted
over to the other goldrider's weyr. She wanted to check in with
Lanniya and see how the younger woman felt about going to Dragonsfall.
It was going to be yet another move for the young woman, and that
could be really stressful on a person, as Kapera knew from experience.
}: She is packing. She says she would enjoy the break. :{ Anaeryth's
response was prompt.
Riyanth relayed the answer to her rider, and Kapera headed on over and
knocked on the door.
"Hi Lanniya. How much fun are you having?" she asked.
"None." Lanniya was sprawled on her floor, crates scattered around her
feet. "I didn't think I had this much stuff."
"Moving's never easy. Every time I've had to, I've pared things down.
Well...everything except my outfit collection, that's easy to keep
track of. But little knickknacks and other things? Much harder to keep
track of," Kapera said sympathetically.
"You know, moving used to be just something I did with the Trade
caravan. I was used to it." She sighed, looking around. "Now, I just
kinda want to stay still for a while."
"I've had three moves since I Impressed. I think it would take
something truly significant to make me want to do a fourth. Of course,
I know that Cyradis could decide to send me elsewhere at any point,"
Kapera said. "Does it make it better that you'll be living with your
weyrmate?"
"He was going to move here." She sighed, then thought about F'lin,
then figured it might have been better that K'ale didn't move here.
"Well, it does make it better. And some of the people from Riverbluff
will be there, so I'll know people at least."
"When I transferred the first time, I didn't know anyone where I was
going. I think that's a harder adjustment than if you have people
around who can help out."
Kapera paused for a moment, trying to figure out if she should
actually say what she'd had in mind she was going to say as she walked
her way over here. She was afraid that Lanniya might be a bit upset
that _she_ was the one who had to transfer when she'd really just
gotten to Dolphin Cove, and that it wasn't Kapera being sent
elsewhere. Yes, there were good reasons for Kapera not to transfer -
and especially to not transfer to Dragonsfall in particular - but the
logic and reasons couldn't always dictate how the emotions would feel.
"I hope you like it there. It's a very pretty weyr in the summer when
all the wildflowers are blooming down on the plains below. Though the
winters will be cold and snowy, which is quite an adjustment. Did you
pass through very snowy areas with the caravan?"
"Not often. We would usually stay put during the winter near a Hold.
It's dangerous to get caught out in that weather." She put a lid on a
crate. "I hope I do like it there. I'll be there for a long time. I
hope." She looked up. "I'll make the best of it. I was scared when I
transferred here to, but Pierka was here. And I'll visit when I can. "
She frowned. "Can I ask a favor of you?"
"I'm sure the Headwoman there will help you with clothing, and the
goldrider weyrs have convenient Lower Caverns access so you won't have
to be outside as much as some people, so enjoy that," the older
goldrider suggested.
Kapera felt a flutter of nerves run through her belly when Lanniya
asked about a favor. If it had to do with returning to Dragonsfall at
all...
"Sure, what can I do?" she asked in as casual a tone as she could.
Rising to her feet, Lanniya wiped her hands on her hips. "It's F'lin."
She pushed her hair behind her ear. "Can you...keep an eye on him?"
She frowned just a little, trying not to think too much about what had
happened between them. It had been far more passionate than she had
ever expected it to be. "He's lonely and he's having a hard time with
the move from River Bluff." She chewed on her lower lip. "I think he's
feeling out of place and he needs someone to keep his spirits up." She
glanced up at Kapera, not knowing that her cheeks had warmed.
Kapera saw that Lanniya was turning a bit colored, and wondered about
it. Had F'lin been something more to her before she found her current
lover, the one she was weyrmating with?
"I'd be happy to keep an eye on him for you. I know a lot of the River
Bluff transfers are having a hard time. And with his family history I
imagine it's been harder on him," Kapera said.
"Thank you. I really care about him and I just want to see him more at
ease." She tucked her hair behind her ear and cleared her throat.
"He's a good friend."
"One of your closest friends here?" she guessed.
"Yes. We had some..tough spots, but I guess that the same as any
friendship. I just want to make sure that he's going to be okay."
"I'll look out for him. Our bronzers need to be healthy for the Weyr to be."
"Thanks." She offered a more ready smile. "And can you let me know if
he needs anything? I mean, I may not be able to do much, but he'd
never tell me."
"I can have Riyanth call Anaeryth. I think if you stopped in on
occasion it might help him to see friends who are leaving."
"I'll come to see Pierka and A'dryn as often as I can, so I'm sure
it'll be okay to see him too." Would that be okay with K'ale? She
still hadn't told him. Maybe he'd not be comfortable with it after he
knew. But she'd think about that then. "Thanks, Kapera."
"Goldriders or for helping each other out," Kapera said cheerfully. At
least, that was how it should be. It wasn't what she'd always
experienced, but she was trying to make things better for others than
it had been for her.
"If you need any favors, just ask me." Lanniya smiled, a little more
brightly now that she knew that she could leave Dolphin Cove in a good
mindset. "Is there anything about Dragonsfall that I need to know that
I may not get told right away?"
"Remember that there's two weyrlakes, one inside and warmed for
winter, plus the visible outside one. I always went to the winter one
a bit earlier than the people who have been at Dragonsfall longer."
Because most weyrs only had one lake, it was easy to forget there was
a second one.
"It's summer now but it still gets cold faster in the fall than you
might expect. If you don't have good winter clothes, talk to the
Headwoman as soon as possible, or see what your trading family can
help you find. I do miss the excuse to have beautiful shawls and
scarves."
"So I'm not going to get to wear my skirts often." She had figured
that, but she'd hoped she could be wrong. "I've talked to Yanley
already. She's weyrmated to K'ale's father. " She sighed, then
shrugged. "Guess I'll have to just get used to it."
"You can wear something under them to make it warmer, but otherwise,
not as much chance for nice skirts or sleeveless tops."
"Well...shaffit." Lanniya wrinkled her nose. "That doesn't seem very enjoyable."
"It's got its own charms at the right time of Turn," she promised. "If
there's anything we can do to help before you leave, or even once
you're there, you can call Riyanth and we'll help. I want this to work
out for you."
Lanniya's lip turned up, just a little. "So you don't get sent there instead?"
Well, it was true to a certain extent. Did she really want to go back?
Even if she could? "So you and K'ale can be happy," she said.
Lanniya inclined her head. "We will be. I'll make sure of it."
