Meeting the Newest Boss

Writers: Avery, Suzee

Characters: R'enh, Z'dhi
Description: Z'dhi meets his new wingleader.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 4 of Turn 9

R'enh

R'enh

Torrent had a new Wingleader. R'enh, of bronze Mnoranth. The
bronzerider who had transferred in from Dolphin Cove and immediately
moved in with the Weyrwoman. Z'dhi had only been here a month and he
felt like he was still getting used to his wing and his wingmates.

He wondered if adding a new leader into the mix was going to change
things significantly. Maybe the man would keep things the same and get
used to how the wing currently worked before making changes. Maybe the
man would want to come in and immediately put his own stamp onto
things. There was no way for Z'dhi to know this until he met him. Or
really, until he saw what the man did with the wings. Which he'd see
at drills, or at a wing meeting, he assumed.

Meetings! He should meet the new Wingleader. Should he wait until
after they were spoken to at drills? Maybe then the Wingleader would
announce how he wanted to get to know his wing. Or maybe he should go
visit his office first, before drills, just to get a feeling for him
and what he'd be like. Would that be polite?

He was about to work himself up worrying about it, but Jahith
interrupted with her calm mindvoice. }:I think you should drop by his
office in the morning. Bring something. Show you're respectful.:{

She had good advice. So Z'dhi reported to the Wingleader's office the
next day, bringing a small gift of cookies and holding them in one
hand while he knocked on the door with the other.

"Come," R'enh called and looked up with a friendly smile to see who
else wanted to meet the new Wingleader today.

Z'dhi entered, holding the plate in front of him as an offering.
"Wingleader R'enh, sir? My duty to you and Mnoranth," he said with a
bow.

"And mine to you and your dragon," R'enh had red the knots but of
course they didn't come with a name. His eyebrow quirked with a
question.

"We're Z'dhi, and Jahith. First wave of Torrent. I mean, uh, we're
currently in the first wave of Fall, anyway, you might change that,"
he amended, his words tumbling out.

R'enh stifled a chuckle and pointed at the chair. "Why don't you have a
seat. How long have you been with Torrent?"

The greenrider sank into the indicated chair and balanced the tray on
his knees. "We transferred in from Windswept Islands Weyr at the end
of month 1. Helped with rebalancing the Weyrs."

"So where did you fly in the wings at Windswept?" He smiled in a
friendly way to show he was just gathering information.

"Mid-level," he answered promptly. "Except for once when I was scored
in the fifth Turn when I flew in Queen's."

"Most of us have had that experience at one time or another." He held
up his right hand to show the missing finger and scars up the side of
his hand until they disappeared into his cuff. "Did you also fly first
wave there?"

"Most recently, yessir," Z'dhi said. "Flew second wave before the
accident. But I prefer it in first. If that's okay. A bit less time to
get nervous."

"Well, I don't see why we can't keep that arrangement," he said with a
nod. "Do you have any other special talents or perhaps a craft?"

"Technician, sir. I was excited to transfer to Dragonsfall because
it's one of the original Southern Weyrs, with an older and better
designed system of electrics and it's been well-maintained because
it's been continuously inhabited, compared to the Weyrs which were
closed down and then revived. I know it's not much use for Fall but I
hope I can use it to contribute to keep things running in general as
another pair of trained hands."

Some Wingleaders thought it was a useless craft for a rider - like his
old one. It wasn't as directly relevant as dragonhealing or as a
Tanner's experience with straps and flying gear but it could still be
of use, and that had always been important to Z'dhi.

"Well, I have heard that most riders keep braziers in their weyrs in
case the power and heat go out. I guess it's an old system so I'm sure
they'll put you to work." Then he pointed to the plate in the other
man's hand, "So whatcha got there?"

"Oh!" he said with a start. "Cookies. I brought them for you." He held
them up to offer R'enh.

"Great," R'enh said. **Perks to being the Wingleader.**

Z'dhi settled them on the desk. "I should go and let you meet other
people. Welcome to Dragonsfall again, sir," he said, before heading
out the door.
