**It's times like a these another experienced goldrider at the Weyr would be nice.** Saibra thought as she stared at her wing roster. Dragonsfall Weyr didn't have a goldrider over forty Turns of age. She was thirty-seven, Teseada twenty-two, and the incoming Lanniya was only sixteen. For such an old Weyr, things had certainly gotten messed up in the goldrider department, Saibra thought. How had one of the oldest locations in the South ended up with such young leadership?
**Well, it doesn't matter, it's not like I can change it,** the Weyrwoman thought. All she could do was work with the individuals that she had.
With her pregnancy and Onnyth egg heavy, there would come a time when both Saibra and Teseada would be grounded. It didn't happen often that both goldriders were unable to fly Thread, but for a short overlap of time Sienna Wing would be without Wingleader or Wingsecond for 'falls. Not only did Sienna Wing lack a Wingthird, but they also lacked a junior goldrider old enough or experienced enough to lead the Wing.
This left Saibra in a predicament. She would prefer to leave one of her seasoned wingriders in charge, such as Zh'no or Tavia, but since they rode a blue and green, they only flew half of 'fall. She would need a brown at the least. There was Z'rac, but he was so new to Dragonsfall that she didn't feel comfortable leaving such a responsibility on him until he better understood the Queen's Wing formations.
Now she would be forced to pull a bronze or brownrider from another Wing or placement to serve as temporary Wingleader until Z'rac felt ready, if he would even accept the responsibility. Saibra scanned the full roster that contained all of Dragonsfall's Wings.
"Let's see," she murmured out loud, "bronzeriders that have the experience.... Well, there's A'kades but..." she wasn't sure if emotionally the bronzerider would be up to that, "and then N'call..." Although his relationship with Teseada might make that a sticky situation. She continued down the list, "W'ser trades out halfway through to be with the dragon infirmary," she said of the Weyrdragonhealer.
Saibra's eyes reached the bottom of the list, "That leaves either G'nir or D'kere." Her nose wrinkled at the mention of the former Weyrleader. She'd rather eat a trundlebug salad than have to turn her Wing over to G'nir. "Fortunately he'll be busy as Weyrlingmaster during Threadfalls." That left D'kere. He was the Weyrlingmaster's Second, but G'nir had E'naer, a very experienced third, and several Weyrlingstaff members to help. Plus, D'kere had flown in the Queens' Wing prior to being promoted to Weyrlingmaster's Second.
"Perfect," she decided. **Tell D'kere I would like to see him in my office after lunch.**
~*~
D'kere had been thinking all morning about what reason the Weyrwoman could have for calling him to her office. The only time he ever saw Saibra up close was when they were both working in the dragon infirmary. Even though D'kere was a dragonhealer, he didn't have much time to practice his craft because he was typically busy with Weyrlings. He wondered if it was something to do with that?
}:Maybe she just likes us,:{ Kenirath said in a swoony voice, eyes whirling in Chioneth's direction.
The senior Queen noted the bronze's stare and pulled one of her golden wings over her head.
}:He's here,:{ Chioneth reported to Saibra, annoyance clear in her lofty voice.
**What's the matter?** Saibra wondered, even as she gestured for D'kere to come into her office.
}:Nothing that I can't handle.:{ The gold replied.
"D'kere, thanks for coming," Saibra said as she reclaimed her place behind her desk.
"It's no trouble, Weyrwoman," D'kere said with a polite tilt of his head.
"I'll get straight to it then. Towards the middle of month three I am going to need you to start flying 'fall with Sienna Wing as the temporary Wingleader. I will be grounded with my pregnancy and Teseada will be grounded with Onnyth on the Sands."
The bronzerider's eyebrows shot up, "Me?" How on Pern, out of all the bronzeriders at Dragonsfall, had he been the one chosen for this? D'kere had never showed any ambition towards being a Wingleader.
"Yes. You're the bronzerider with the most experience, who has flown in Sienna before, and who can be spared from their current duties for a bit. My plan is for you to ultimately turn things over to Z'rac, but he needs a few 'falls with Sienna first before he'll be prepare for that, and that's if he agrees to it of course." Saibra lifted her hands. "I know it's asking a lot, but we are really very limited on options."
Suddenly D'kere recalled a question that Talwynn had idly asked him once upon a time, would he ever consider being a Wingleader, and now here he was, being asked to lead Sienna, even if only temporarily.
"Of course I will, Weyrwoman, it is my duty."
Saibra had known the bronzerider wouldn't refuse, it wasn't exactly something that a dragonrider sworn to fight Thread could do, but it at least helped that he hadn't said it grudgingly.
"Thank you, D'kere. It won't be a problem that Talwynn will be one of your wingriders, will it?"
D'kere hadn't even considered that, but his weyrmate had just been put back on active duty with Sienna.
"No ma'am, it won't be a problem. It's only temporary."
Saibra nodded, "Good, and you're right, if Z'rac agrees, you'll probably only need to lead Sienna for three 'falls, four max. We'll need you to come drill with Sienna starting next sevenday, that'll give you a month before you actually take over the Wing."
"Okay, I'll let G'nir know," he wondered what the Weyrlingmaster's reaction would be.
**Good,** Saibra thought, that was a conversation she could avoid with G'nir.
"Thank you, D'kere. That's all I needed." The Weyrwoman smiled, and D'kere knew that he was dismissed.
