Being alone in the little cothold was both relaxing and strenuous,
especially to Yriadha, who was used to constant activity. But she
needed time to heal, and more important, time to think. She had only
Torinya for a visitor, excepting one visit by Bryvin. And that visit
had shaken her. She paced along the floor, gently bouncing Yavin as
she walked and tried to think of a way to ensure her son's future.
The knock on the door startled her. Thinking it to be her daughter,
she called out, "Come in."
The door swung open. "Can I see him," Sophque asked.
"Sophque!" A genuine smile crossed Yriadha's face at the sight and
sound of her friend. Some of her tension seemed to melt away from her
shoulder. "I'm so glad to see you. Of course you can." When Sophque
came in, Yriadha gently handed the small child into Sophque's arms.
She pulled some of the swaddling away from the tiny face and smiled.
"He's beautiful," she said. She swayed instinctively and patted the
little bottom. "Is he a sweetheart?"
There was pride in Yriadha's expression as they both peered down at
the little boy. "He is. But he is his father's son already. He can be
demanding when he wants his feeding. When he sleeps, he is a
sweetheart." There was a smile on her face. "So different from my
other sons."
"Yes," Sophque chuckled. "Lords are demanding," she grinned. "Even
very tiny ones. What is his name?"
"Bryvin named him Yavin." She moved to sit, offering Sophque another
comfortable chair. "Was Sophine a demanding child as well?"
"Oh hello Yavin," she smiled at the sleeping baby. She sat in the
offered chair and thought back over the turns. "She was a sweet baby,
very clingy."
"He's a quiet baby until he's hungry. " She went silent for a moment,
then spoke again. "Bryvin wants to give him to a wet nurse." Her eyes
showed the strain of the situation. "It's bad enough that I am raising
my son as a cousin, but to give up nursing him..."
"Well," Sophque sympathised with her friend. "You don't have the cover
of a husband to explain it. Mine was suspicious at best. But after all
this time people remember that I had a husband who was lost at sea.
How could you explain it?"
"I understand that, but he's my baby." Yriadha rubbed the bridge of
her nose. "I hate giving him up to a wetnurse. And if it is revealed,
then Bryvin will repudiate him and me." Stress began to show more on
her face. "I couldn't bear that."
"Then we have to make sure that doesn't happen." Sophque said. "We
make sure you're padded and bound up," she nodded. "Like we hid the
pregnancy," she smiled. "We can hide this."
She watched as Sophque gently rocked her little son. "Thank you,
Sophque. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"We've always had each other's backs Yriadha," she said seriously.
"That's not going to change." She gave the Headwoman a small smile.
