Urtain rubbed his chin as he left the creche. One of the little
toddlers had bounced right into his chin and had left a healthy
bruise. He had been lucky, if he hadn't dodged, the little tyke would
have slammed right into his nose. He could live with a bruised chin,
especially since his time with them was soon to be limited. Thinking
about that, he nearly ran into a younger boy and muttered a soft
"S'cuse me. Sorry."
"That's ok, Urtain," Kaiafel muttered, himself feeling a little sore,
though not in the chin. His bruises went deeper.
Urtain's brow furrowed, the muttering not what he knew to be the
usual Kaiafel. He peered at the other boy for a long moment before he
asked, "You okay?"
Kaiafel shrugged a shoulder. "I was hoping my Da could have a visit
this restday, but he's too busy."
If he wasn't here, Urtain, reasoned, it must be because he was at
another Weyr. "Too busy, huh? Well, my Da's like that too sometimes."
It was nice to know that his wasn't the only father too busy
sometimes. "What does your Da do?"
"He's a rider. Don't get to see him much at all, since he's busy." He
tilted his head a little. "Yours too, I guess?"
Kaiafel nodded. "Yeah. My Da's U'kaiah."
Urtain's brows shot up. "Oh...I get it. No wonder he's busy. Isn't he
a Weyrleader now?"
"Yeah. But he'll come back. He promised me would come back." Of
course, that had been over a Turn ago...
He didn't immediately respond to that, unknowing what to say. He
didn't know what it would be like if he couldn't see his Da at least
every other day and Kaiafel was younger than he. He considered the
younger boy for a long moment before speaking. "Well, do you want to
come with me and do something? I mean, I was about to go fishing for
my Ma. She likes fresh fish and since it's not freezing right now..."
He shrugged.
"I don't have a pole..." And Kaiafel had actually never tried fishing
before, though he wasn't quite ready to admit that to Urtain just yet.
"You can borrow one of mine. I have a couple that I use. If you want
to borrow one, I mean."
"Yeah, sure, that would be great." Kaiafel was curious about fishing.
He had heard a lot of people enjoyed it, but when he was around water
he was usually looking for flit eggs, washing dragons, or playing
waterball with his friends. Still, he had to save face. "You know,
it's been a few turns since I went fishing, so I might need a few
pointers..."
Urtain studied the younger boy for a moment and his lips lifted just a
little. "Sure. No problem. I'll help. Especially if you catch
anything. Cause then you have to clean it."
Kaiafel shrugged. "I can do that. I clean dragons all the time."
How hard could washing a fish be?
Urtain bit the inside of his cheek, his suspicions confirmed. He
managed not smile and just nodded, his face very carefully blank. "Of
course. Meet me at the lake in a quarter of a candlemark then?"
This was going to be fun, Kaiafel was sure. "Ok, I'll just tell my Ma!"
"I'll meet you there." Urtain gave a half wave and turned on his heel
to get his poles.
