K'reyel

"Hello Weyrleader," K'mai said with a smile that didn't quite reach
his eyes. "It's good to see you again, though I wish the circumstances
were better."

"Don't we all," K'reyel said as he rose to his feet and held out a
hand in greeting.

K'mai gripped it. "My duty to Erdeth. Is your family well?"

"They're doing fine. Mayel is growing like a weed, and Mai is enjoying
teaching again. Mayel's not old enough to understand that where he
used to live is not there anymore, thank Faranth"

K'mai realized with a pang that Sabia wouldn't remember River Bluff
either. "I hope we'll be able to rebuild, even if it may take some
time."

"Turns, if its even possible."

K'mai shrugged. "I like to think positive. River Bluff has always been
home, I'd like it to be home again someday."

"Never say never, it just might not be in this pass," K'reyel knew how
much work it would be, and to find the time and deal with fall as
well, he hated to be a pessimist, but at times like this is was hard
not to.

"But I suppose for now I should settle into Dragonsfall." K'mai had
never lived anywhere else, so he should look at this as a new
adventure.

"Our headwoman, Yanley, she'll help you find a weyr to start with. As
for a wing assignment, I believe Cyan would suit you. D'ale is the
wingsecond, so if when you're settled, you report to him."

"Ah, D'ale." K'mai nodded. "I don't know him well but I know of him.
He was at River Bluff for a few turns."

"I think so," replied K'reyel. "Make sure you ask for plenty of furs,
the weather, it can take some getting used to here."

K'mai made a face. "So I've heard." He'd gotten a taste of it when he
came to Dragonsfall for Hatchings in the colder months. "It's a
sacrifice I'm willing to make to stay close to Uetia and our
daughter."

"She'll never know the difference, until she's old enough to
understand it for herself."

"I suppose. Growing up with snow will be as normal to her as growing
up next to the sea was for me." If K'mai thought too much about what
he'd lost, he might start to cry.

"I'm sure she'll be happy here. And Uetia too."

"I really hope so." K'mai took a breath and tried to change the
subject a bit. "So how are you dealing with the influx of new riders?"

"We're coping. Yanley has been incredible in finding places for
everyone to stay. The wings will take a little longer to get into
balance, but we will cope, we're dragonriders."

It was such a serious statement K'mai couldn't help a little smile.
"That we are. Through Fall, fog and fire and all that."

"Exactly. And the heroes in the harper tales I tell my son always
overcome this sort of adversity." K'reyel managed a grin.

K'mai nodded. "We've so far managed to survive a surprise Pass, I
suppose we can make it through this."

"It looks like the worst already happened."

The bluerider wasn't sure if that was supposed to be encouraging.
"Nowhere to go but up I guess."

"And that's the attitude we're going to need to move forwards."

K'mai tried to reach for his usual optimism. "And we all need
something cheerful, don't we? I need to plan a big party to help
everyone forget their troubles for a bit."

"Well if you need help with the music, speak to Mai, she'll introduce
you to the harpers here."

"Thank you. Always a good idea to know the local harpers." And K'mai
probably already knew a few of them, or their friends and relatives.
He did enjoy going to Hatchings all over and had met quite a few
people. Plus there were other River Bluff refugees, and people who had
transferred from River Bluff to Dragonsfall before now. K'mai reminded
himself that it wasn't as if he'd been cast out into a strange place
where he didn't know anyone.

"Anything else I can do to help you settle in?" asked K'reyel. Some
had asked to speak to mind healers, discreetly of course.

"I think mostly what I need is time, but thank you, sir." He wasn't
alone, and there were plenty of people here that would help him.
