Characters: A'be, L'pin
Description: A'be remembers his first flight.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 21 of Turn 8
A'be watched Uljath sweep down and take down his prey. He admired the
way his dragon moved, so sleek, fast and agile. He couldn't believe
they were almost senior weyrlings now. Time had seemed to fly. The
Weyrling training had been intense and time consuming, He had worried
how he could handle the weyrling ban but that had turned out to be
useless worry, most nights he had been too tired to even think about
sex.. After four month of training, A'be was finally starting to feel
like he really was a dragonrider. He could still remember when he had
felt that for the first time.
~*~
A'be tried to hide his nervousness and appear cool and calm while they
waited their turn. Waiting to their turn to fly together for the first
time. Uljath had been practicing and strengthening his flight muscles
but this time A'be would be sitting on his back. A'be fidgeted because
Uljath was one of the small sized blues, barely larger than average
green.
L'pin walked up to the pair of them and gave a reassuring smile.
"A'be, how is Uljath doing today? Is he exited for this?"
"He's fine, very excited and confident," A'be replied. Uljath was
eager, he not so.
L'pin looked over the pair. Uljath's conformation was good and the
blue had been working on his strength exercises. "Go ahead and mount
up onto his back. Have him let Chaneth know immediately if there's any
muscle discomfort."
"Yes, sir," A'be replied with a nod and mounted Uljath. He was still
worried he was too heavy for him.
Uljath snickered. }: You are not that big. There are greens whose
riders are bigger and heavier than you. I'm stronger than them. :{
He did have a point, A'be was kind of average-sized.
L'pin circled them again, looking at A'be's balance. "You two look
good together. How is he feeling with you there?"
}: You belong there, :{ Uljath said.
"Like I belong here," A'be repeated it.
"Well, you're sitting well in the saddle and he's looking comfortable,
so I think you're ready," L'pin told them. "You'll take off from the
ground and fly across the weyrbowl to land by E'ska at the other end,"
he said, pointing to the other bluerider who was serving as the target
point. "Don't go higher than the Rim, just up and across and land."
"Yes, sir," A'be replied. **Did you hear that, Uljath. Not too high,
just to Eska. And no tricks, time will come for those.**
He looked to L'pin to give him the signal.
L'pin gave the hand signal and watched the pair critically. They'd
already had one daredevil today when B'lhir had tried to go well above
the bowl in height.
}: Fine, I'll behave, :{ Uljath promised and spread his wings. First
he did few strokes to test and warm then up and then he launched
himself to the air. He ascended quickly and A'be tugged the straps.
** Level flight before the rim!** he reminded his blue.
Uljath moved to the straight, level flight just below the indicated
height. Brief glide and then it was time to land. He felt
disappointed, this flight was over far too soon.
** We'll get to fly more, and then even more until you're complaining
from exhaustion,** A'be told him.
"Good job," E'ska said to them when they landed, flashing a positive hand
sign.
}:You may come from that line back to us,:{ Chaneth said to Uljath.
"Back to with the same way," A'be said to Uljath, forgetting not to
say it aloud.
Uljath lauched himself to the air again, turned around after reaching
the flight height and then landed neatly next to Chaneth.
}: This is fun, :{ the young blue wasn't a tad bit tired.
L'pin gave A'be a broad smile. "How's it feel to be properly a
_dragonrider_ now?"
"It feels great," A'be cracked into a wide grin.
"He did very well at it and didn't go too far. He's feeling okay to go
again?"
"Yes, he's not tired at all, he's full of energy and eager," A'be
replied after checking his lifemate. Uljath was actully kind of bouncy
and jubilant.
"As soon as the last three are done, he can go once more," L'pin
assured him. He clapped A'be on the shoulder. "Congratulations again."
