"Bronzerider," K'reyel said as he greeted the new arrival. "Come in
and take a seat."
"Thank you, Weyrleader." D'ren took the offered chair. He was still
shaken from the events at River Bluff and being displaced for several
days.
"I understand you want to transfer here. Normally, I'd be asking for
your papers, but under the circumstances, I'm going to have to ask you
to fill me in on things." Even as he spoke, the Weyrleader was pouring
glasses of juice, and pushing a bowl of snacks in the younger man's
direction. "My apologies for being direct, it saves time, and it'll
heklp me point you towards the right people to get you sorted and
settled."
D'ren took a sip of the juice, his hand shaking just a bit. "Well,
sir, I'll keep it short. I was Searched from the Harper Hall and
Impressed at Dolphin Cove. After a while I asked for a transfer to
River Bluff, and well, now I'm here. We flew under your father when
you were his 'Second."
K'reyel nodded. He did remember the younger man. "And you didn't want
to go back to Dolphin Cove?"
"No, sir. I left to get away from bad memories and I didn't want to
return." Though D'ren couldn't help wondering bad luck would follow
him wherever he went. He still couldn't believe Lenala was gone.
"I see." And he did understand, it took guts to admit there were
things that you couldn't deal with. "Do you have a craft?"
"Yes, I'm a harper. Though I haven't had much time for practice since
Impressing."
K'reyel made a note. "I'll assign you to Azure wing."
That meant he'd be in the Weyrleader's Wing again. "Thank you, sir."
Menanth would certainly be pleased.
"Our headwoman, Yanley, will find you a weyr and help you get some
things from the stores to make it seem like yours." K'reyel said. "I'd
expect you want to take a couple of days to settle in?"
"Yes, if you don't mind. There's been... a lot to adjust to." This
wasn't a regular transfer afterall, and D'ren certainly wasn't the
only one feeling shaky.
"I understand." And he did, it was one thing to move as a regular
transfer, but an enforced move like this..
D'ren nodded. "I know it was your home too, sir, not that long ago."
"Maybe one day riders will be able to go back there."
"I hope so," D'ren said with a sigh, although he wasn't sure if he'd
want to go back. Maybe he'd keep moving around Pern, trying to escape
the memories of each new tragedy.
K'reyel scribbled a note. "If you give this to the Headwoman, she'll
sort you out. Just ask anyone passing and they'll point you her way."
D'ren took the scrap of hide. "Thank you."
}:Things will be all right. This is a good place,:{ Menanth reassured his rider.
"Welcome to Dragonsfall."
D'ren held on to his dragon's confidence. If nothing else, he owed
Menanth not to wallow in his grief and make an honest effort of
building his life here. D'ren thanked the Weyrleader again and turned
to leave.
