Description: Chaysea and Kapera make arrangments for the new arrivals at Dolphin Cove.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 28 of Turn 8
Chaysea had noticed the frostiness between Weyrwoman Cyradis and her
Second, so she wasn't surprised that it was just her and Kapera
looking over the weyr maps and supplies to see where they could put
the River Bluff transfers. Dolphin Cove would be housing an entire
Wing, so they needed plenty of space.
The disaster at River Bluff had meant an increase in workload for all
of Dolphin Cove's leadership. Between coordinating the supply runs,
loaning riders for Threadfall, caring for the wounded, it had been a
busy sevenday. Now with the news that River Bluff was closing and the
borders of Fall territory were re-organizing, it was time to figure
out where to reallocate new riders.
She squinted at the maps Chaysea had laid out. "I've got a thought for
the Crafters coming over, the ones who aren't riders. How about
putting them in the old Harper area where the Technicans group is?"
Chaysea's lips twisted a little in amusement, "Well, they would fit
physically. It'll be interesting to see the two cultures mix. The
technicians asked to have the bathing facilities in the old harper
area converted to male and female, since they were use to more modesty
than weyrfolk."
Kapera had never been over there and didn't know that. It seemed
archaic to her, but for people trained in the crafts and probably not
weyr-bred, it made sense. "Well, we can warn the Technicians that
they'll be getting neighbors who are weyrbred. We could ask the people
who get assigned there to respect the segregation. Maybe assign
hall-background crafters there. Some of our current crafters might
also want to if there's more space?" she pondereds.
"I don't think it should be too much of a problem. I imagine the
displaced River Bluff people will just be glad of a warm, sturdy
place. It's not too much of a walk to the Weyr's communal pools if
they want to do that." Chaysea pointed out, running her finger along
the map until she found the other bathing areas.
"That should work out fine, then. The lower caverns workers, do we
have enough space for them?" Kapera knew that some of the
lowest-ranked ones shared rooms, there wasn't enough space for all the
support staff to have individual rooms.
"There are open bunks in the community living quarters," which housed
most of their lower caverns support staff who didn't live in family
quarters.
"Hopefully there'll be enough for the ones who come over." At least
they weren't absorbing the whole population. Just a wing's worth or
so.
The riders were the next part to settle. The most desirable weyrs were
all probably taken by existing inhabitants. There were spaces in the
seaside ones, she thought, but those were for people with dragons only
and bad for families. And how many riders would be bringing those?
"So how many riders are going to get stuck up in the high-level weyrs
with a long walk down and no bathing pools?" she asked.
Chaysea looked at the list they'd been given of incoming riders.
"There will be quite a few. I think it would be best to sort through
and put the younger riders in those weyrs, and then we'll move to
single riders coming in with no family."
"They'll have more time to find something else," Kapera agreed.
"I did notice a few low-level weyrs, we're getting a few injured in.
Like the former Weyrleader. Should we fill those open with injured and
elderly before letting families pick?"
"I guess we'll need to get some reports from the healers and see what
the injuries are. If it's something that will heal in a couple of
months, we could give them some of our guest weyrs until they're ready
to move into something more permanent. That way we're not cramming
families into weyrs that are too small." Chaysea rubbed her hand
across her forehead. "That will leave us in a pinch, though, if we get
guests from the Holds who want somewhere to stay but..." She shrugged.
"But rehoming our new riders matters more," the goldrider agreed. "The
guest weyrs aren't a bad idea. Thanks."
"Of course." Chaysea still had to figure out how she was going to take
some of the lower caverns workers that were coming over to Dolphin
Cove and integrate them with the staff she already had.
"I saw a few are coming with families. I'm concerned about having
enough weyrs for those," Kapera said. They needed larger weyrs and
most of those were taken up.
Chaysea mulled over the problem, "You know, at River Bluff their
crafters had separate buildings detached from the Weyr. I wonder if
the Weyrleaders would consider something like that? It wouldn't help
us in the short term, but it could be a long-term solution. Getting
the crafters out of the lower caverns would open up the space for the
staff."
"That's an excellent idea. It's not like there wouldn't be places to
put them. If not in the Bowl itself, maybe behind the Weyr or a bit
down the beach. We could make the proposal."
"It would be better to expand than live like a nest of tunnelsnakes."
Chaysea said, thinking out loud. "But, I guess that's all we can do
for now."
"In fact. Once we show Cyradis these sheets we can see what she
thinks. If they approve it while the Technicians are still here, they
could even get those buildings wired."
"That would certainly make it worth the crafters' while to give up their
workshops in the lower caverns and move to the new buildings." Chaysea
agreed.
"That would solve all our problems. In a Turn or so." Kapera smiled at
Chaysea, pleased they were thinking along the same lines.
"Any other concerns outside of living space for them all?"
"I don't think so. We have a good supply of dry foods in the kitchens,
enough to feed them, we'll just have to reorder our rations until we see
what feeding this new influx will be like." Chaysea wasn't overly
worried about it, they had managed when times were tighter.
"I have the utmost of confidence in you," Kapera said. "Just ask me if
you need anything a goldrider can get or organize for you."
"Will do." Chaysea said with a sharp nod. She didn't really care what
was said about Kapera, she liked working with the goldrider, and thought
they made a pretty decent team.
