Description: The Lord Holder's staff woes.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 8 of Turn 8
Corowal looked the stack of hides on his desk and sighed. He picked up the first one.
A letter asking a permission for prolonged leave of absence from duties. From Sarban. He had expected this letter since they had received the word of his sister's husband's sudden death. Such a tragedy. Sarban was need to help his family. Of course, she was Corowal's cousin too, so he would send his condolences with Sarban.
Problem was, Corowal thought, that Sarban probably wasn't coming back. He was the most likely person to take over his brother-in-law's Hold. Their children were too young to inherit and Sarban was well qualified after working as a Steward in major Hold for Turns. Corowal could understand and relate to that and wished him luck. Even if it left him without a Steward.
Perhaps he could promote one of the assistant stewards to fill the position temporarily or even rotate it among them. He made a note to ask Sarban's opinion before he left and then signed the hide that would release Sarban from his duties. The timing couldn't be worse though. With ever switching Headwomen coming and going, the Turnover feast preparation were going to be interesting. Add Felyna's bedrest and the stolen tithes, perhaps they should keep it smaller this time.
Corowal pondered about it bit more. Yes, that sounded good. While they had managed to find the missing riverboat eventually, the cargo was as good as gone. The boat had been cleverly hidden to one of the small tributaries that ran into Nettleweed River. The crew and passengers had been unharmed, although the Captain had been livid with fury. The Hold had been forced to compensate the loss to the Weyr, which meant paying double tithes. Add poor harvest from the last growth season and the Hold was, if not struggling, then at least low on resources.
Keep the Turnover celebration small and blame it to the thieves, vandals and anti-Weyr dissenters. A good speech could sway the public opinion against them. He made some notes.
Corowal picked up the next hide, report from Miranek. It made his frown. Felyna's condition was weakening. The healers suspected she had gotten some sort of infection but they couldn't pinpoint its source. At least the baby seemed to be growing well. She was nearing the term. He just hoped she would last to the end of it and deliver a healthy baby. She deserved it, she had been through a lot. Trusting that Miranek would inform him if the was a change in situation, he put that hide aside. Nothing he could do about it.
He picked up the next in stack. A plan for planting. It was something a Steward should be handling. Corowal rubbed his face. "Do I have to do everything myself? I need more klah." He reached for the bell to ring for a drudge.
