K'reyel

K'reyel

The day after Threadfall was a good day to handle minor tasks. A'kades
wanted to go pick up material to continue working on personal tanning
projects. Though he could requisition it from the Weyr stores, he
preferred to go directly to the Hall and take advantage of purchasing
from them. It was good to spend some time in the old familiar
territory of the Hall.

He'd had Volaith check in on River Bluff, and nothing was going on
that would call him back there. Being at the Tannercraft and in
Dragonsfall territory made him think about K'reyel and how he hadn't
really caught up with the other man since he went to Dragonsfall. Why
not drop by? he thought to himself. So instead of picturing the
familiar Star Stones of his own Weyr, A'kades pictured Dragonsfall
instead.

Volaith landed and let him off, then beat his wings and found a place
on the heights out of the way. }:Erdenth, how are you? My rider is
looking for yours,:{ he said.

}:He will be pleased to se you and yours,:{ Erdenth told Volaith.
}:Come down into the bowl, mine is in his office.:{

Erdenth meanwhile notified his rider of the visitor, and K'reyel had
grabbed a passing drudge, and asked for drinks and refreshments to be
sent along.

A'kades found his way out to the office and knocked on the door. When
he was called in, he smiled at K'reyel. "Weyrleader. How's the job
treating you and Erdenth?"

"So far so good," K'reyel gestured to a chair. "What brings you this way?"

"Buying purchases from the Tannercraft Hall," A'kades said as he took
a seat. "Volaith enjoyed the chance to see snow for once."

"Buy anything nice?" asked K'reyel. "I got hold of some beautifully
dyed leather to make a belt for Mai last time."

"I wanted to make Lenala a gift. There's very soft leather, but I'm
not sure what to make for her yet. I've already gifted her gloves."

"Something to keep a belt knife in maybe?" suggested K'reyel. "She
might like that."

"That's a good idea. Practical but made stylish." It was good to talk
about his craft and think about using it in ways other than just
testing riding straps.

"And you could personalise it for her. You'll know what design and
colours she prefers."

"That's true. Being able to make custom items is pretty rare nowadays.
Usually I'm watching weyrlings' first attempts at straps," he joked.

"Bet that brings back memories of apprentice days."

A'kades winced. "That it does, it's awful," he said. "Are you working
on any personal projects, or too busy?"

"A new jacket for Mayel, the way he grows though, he'll outgrow this
one too." K'reyel smiled as he thought of his son. "Once I've got the
outer sorted, the weavers have the lining all ready to join."

"How old is he now? Around three or four?" A'kades remembered he was growing.

"He's four, I'm trying to make it so he'll get a good couple of turns from
it."

"I remember that. Kadera seemed to keep growing out of her clothes
every half-Turn. Jadirel seemed to grow slower." His children was a
topic he was very proud of.

"Well he's the only one Mai and I will have together, so he is being a
little spoiled." The healers had told them in no uncertain terms not
to try for another baby, after the circumstances around Mayel's birth.
another baby could result in her death, and that of the child also.

A pang of sadness ran through A'kades as he remembered Lenala's
miscarriage. "I absolutely understand the impulse."

"Well we'll just see what happens when he gets a bit older. If he has
his mother's talent for the Harper craft, or he impresses or chooses
some other path."

"I have to admit I'm not sure I want either of mine to Impress. Before
Thread returned, sure. Nowadays, it's harder to imagine."

"Those hatchlings know their own minds, and know who they want. I've
seen them go for someone in the stands before now."

"That's true, dragonets do what they will. But I can hope they don't
like my children." Even if it was a futile one.

He wondered what else was new in K'reyel's life. "So, how are you
dealing with all the snow?"

"It isn't a new thing after those turns I spent at Dream's End, but I
had forgotten just how cold it can get." The weyrleader grinned.
"Mayel, he loves it though, his new friends taught him about snowball
fights, and some less wonderful things that they can do with snow."

A'kades laughed. "After I left Garnet Valley and came to the Weyr to
Impress, I didn't miss it for _Turns_. I can see why Mayel's excited
though."

"Mai gave him a scolding when he came in soaked through, rolling down
the hill without a toboggan was not a good idea."

"Ouch. Was he bruised as well as wet?"

"A couple of bruises. But I can see why he did it, he thinks he has
something to prove. Not only is he the new kid, he's my son."

"There'll be some expectations on him, going forward." A'kades agreed.

"He'll work it out for himself."

"How did settling in go for you and Mai?" he asked.

"It was hard at first, River Bluff was our home, and then to come here
and suddenly find that I was Weyrleader, and that made things even
harder. People were looking at her, and Mayel too, they either seem to
expect him to be some prodigy, or a tiny terror. If only they could
realise he seems to be a pretty normal kid," responded K'reyel.

"It's quite a lot of changes," A'kades said sympathetically. "Ever
miss the Bluff?"

"Sometimes," admitted the Weyrleader. "But don't ever let the riders hear
that."

"Of course not, rumors would spread.I can't blame you though -
obviously the change worked out well, but leaving where you've been a
long time is a change. Though you've moved before," A'kades
remembered. "We'll clearly have to have more events to invite you back
to."

"It won't be quite the same though."

"No, I suppose not."

K'reyel's expression was perhaps unreadable for a second, as the
realization that things really wouldn't be the same again at River
Bluff hit again. "Anyway," he said changing the subject as he heard a
knock at the door. "Perhaps I can persuade you to sample some of the
delights of our kitchen, that must be the snacks I requested."

"I'd be happy to have some snacks," A'kades said. "Your Headwoman is
holdbred, right? She must have some interesting recipes."

"Yes," replied K'reyel as he got up to open the door and allow the
drudge in. "And it looks like she's been working on cheesy pastries
again."

"That sounds like a marvelous recipe," he said. "Is it made with that
rich one from Opal Cove?"

"I think so, and some of the dried fruits we were sent in the tithe."

"Well, I hope you don't mind if I eat a bunch of them for tasting,"
A'kades said. It was good to be catching up with K'reyel.

"Taste away my friend." K'reyel grinned.
