J'darin

J'darin

For the Hatching, J'darin wanted to give his Weyrwoman a special gift.
She didn't want his love, but there was something they both cared a great deal for, and that was the eggs about to turn into dragonets. About a sevenday before the Hatching, he went looking for his lovely Harper friend, Maurgen, with the beautiful smile. Upon asking Mayla, he found she'd been at the Weyr for _turns_! Why hadn't he noticed her before now?

Grumbling at his lapse, he failed to realize it was because he didn't make a habit of noticing people unless they were useful. At least, at first.
Well, he'd noticed her now! With that in mind, he went seeking her, thinking of the beautiful sketch of his own lifemate she'd shown him. Maurgen was in a small weyr that had long ago been converted into makeshift offices. She was seated at a table and busy at work with a tiny paintbrush on a large canvas. An older man with master harper knots on his shoulder peered over her shoulder, offering the occasional advice. Both were so focused on the task at hand that they didn't seem to notice J'darin's entrance. J'darin paused in the doorway, sure he was interrupting something. But he must be done with this, quickly. The Hatching was not that far off. He cleared his throat politely. "Maurgen? I apologize for not sending Oak first with a message." He bowed his head to the older Harper, a Master by his knots. "Pardon my intrusion, Master. I just need a moment."

Maurgen glanced up, her face going from intense concentration to cheerful welcome in a heartbeat. "J--Weyrleader! Of course, you can stop by anytime!"

"Of course," the master repeated dryly, glancing between his excited protégé and the Weyrleader. "Please come in, J'darin. We needed to take a break soon in any case."

Another tip of his head, for a moment he looked every inch the Weyrleader.
But then he smiled brightly at Maurgen's open welcome. She was _so_
lovely when she smiled. He moved toward her and paused to look curiously at her work, then smiled approvingly. Even in unfinished stages, he could tell it was going to be lovely. "Thank you Maurgen. I wished to hire you for another commission, if you don't mind? You did such a wonderful job with my bronze boy." Another of his charming smiles; could he get her to smile again?

He could and she did, smiling up at J'darin before transfering that look to Fortien. "Can you spare me for a day or two?"

Fortien's smile was fond as he looked down at the excited young journeywoman. "For the Weyrleader? Of course."

J'darin looked happily on as Maurgen agreed and her .. mentor? He watched the older man curiously. "I'd like you to sketch the eggs and Nyith as they are on the Hatching sands right now. She has already agreed to let you in to look at her, and her eggs. She's quite proud of them, you know. As long as you don't touch. Do you think you can do this for me? I want to make a gift of it.." He said, finishing a little haltingly. If she agreed, he would shower his little harper with gifts, too. She deserved it for putting up with _him_ and making him feel a little less like a Weyrleader. Maurgen's face lit up at the thought of being able to sit and draw the queen with her clutch. She never would have dared to ask for permission, but if the Weyrleader himself was _asking_ her... "Of course! It would be an honor!" "I'm pleased to hear it Maurgen." He smiled at her again. "You're very talented, you know... and I want to honor this Hatching, Dolphin Cove's first, after the tragedy of a few months ago. You can meet me in the Hatching grounds in a few candlemarks, if you like?" He nodded once more to the older gentleman with her, his eyebrow arched curiously. Who was he?
And would he mind his little Harper seeing the Weyrleader every now and again?

Maurgen glanced up at Fortien, who nodded. "We're always happy to do our best for our Weyrleaders," the Master Harper replied, settling a hand on Maurgen's shoulder. His eyes, however, were all for J'darin, and there was obvious warning there that the Weyrleader had best watch his step.

J'darin smiled in thanks, nodding his head once. "I'll see you when you've finished here, Maurgen." His smile brightened and warmed, just for her.

He paused, looking at the older Harper for a moment. "Good day, Master."
