Kapera

Kapera

With the clutching done, Kapera knew she needed to talk to the
Headwoman about the upcoming celebrations for it. She knocked on the
Headwoman's office door, hoping it was still early enough in the day
that the other woman hadn't been swamped by work yet.

"Come in," Chaysea reached up and buttoned the top button on her
blouse out of habit. She'd undone it earlier because of the heat in
the kitchens. "Weyrwoman Kapera," she gestured to the chair across
from her table, "what can I do for you?"

"I wanted to talk to you about the upcoming Hatching, if you have
time," Kapera said, taking a seat.

"Of course," she pulled out fresh paper to make notes. "Fire away."

There was a time she could have just ordered for what she wanted. Now,
she didn't quite know where her place was - oh, she probably had the
authority to give an order, but she preferred to try to find an
arrangement of cooperation - so when she spoke, her words were
hesitant.

"Is there stocks to serve something - well, not fish? Seafood is nice
and all, but I'd like wherry or herdbeast, if we can. I could try to
get some dragonriders to go hunting, if there isn't the meat right
now."

Chaysea twirled her pencil between her fingers, "It's your hatching,
ma'am, I'll put together whatever you would like." She had been raised
in the Amber Hills area so she was more than fine with something other
than fish.

"Then how does the wherry look? I'd be happy to get a hunting party
set up if we need more."

"There's plenty," she assured her. "Is there a particular way you
would like it to be served?"

"The pit-stewed way in that sauce." Kapera paused. "That may not have
been helpful."

"Oh, pulled wherry, yes we can do that. One of the cooks has been
working on a spicier sauce for that, so there can be options. We still
have the pits we dug and used to cook with when the kitchens were
being wired." Chaysea jotted that down. "You want some root vegetables
put in the pits to slow roast as well?"

"That would be fantastic, yes. It would be a tasty addition. How is
the electricity project going? Did it really improve the kitchen?"

Chaysea nodded while writing down the note about the vegetables. "Oh
yes, the lighting, for one, is such an improvement, and then the
convenience of being able to keep things cold is so nice."

"In this weather, I imagine it would be. Dragonsfall didn't have the
same issue. But I'd trade the snowpack's use in chilling food for
having this beach all the time," she mused. Then she shied away from
the thought.

"Other than not fish, I hadn't had too much in terms of food opinions."

"Okay, we'll find some other complimentary sides and desserts to go
along with the pit wherry then. What about drinks? Is there a
particular wine you would like served?"

"What about a red with a bit of bubbles to make it fun?"

"Sparkling red, I'll get in touch with the Vintner Hall and see what
they have in stock to compliment our own stores." Chaysea thought she
had a pretty good memory of what the Hall had to offer. "What about
decorations?"

"I hadn't thought about that," Kapera admitted. "I've never really

been sure of how to set things up, I'm more concerned with eating."

"How about colors then? Just the traditional Dolphin Cove?" Chaysea
knew she could put Ikalis and some of the other women on the
decorations and they would come out fantastic.

"That would be more than fine."

"Excellent," Chaysea murmured. "Is there anything you need for the
hatching weyr to make it more comfortable while you're there?"

She was going to be there long enough that she'd want improvements,
for sure. "The chair for guests is a little wobbly. Since I like to
have people keeping me company, letting them sit on something nice
would be great. And a little softer padding for the cot."

Chaysea wondered if bronzerider J'nus would be joining Kapera at all
in her temporary weyr. "I've been thinking of replacing that cot in
there altogether. If you have to be away from home you might as well
get to be insanely comfortable, right?" She winked, and then thought
of the couch she and L'pin had... discovered in the furniture storage
room. It would be very suitable for the hatching weyr.

"That would be amazing, actually." Kapera grinned at the thought.

"I'll get that taken care of for you then. Please let anyone in the
kitchens know if there's anything you need while you're there."
Chaysea enjoyed taking care of people, she supposed that was why she
found such fulfillment in the Headwoman's role.

"I will be requesting so much food, and I apologize in advance. I feel
like I barely get enough time to sneak out to the bathing pools when
she's broody." Kapera shook her head. "You don't have a firelizard or
anything, do you?"

"I don't," Chaysea shook her head, "although I've thought more and
more about getting one ever since I've been here."

"There must be gold ones bonded to people who could give some away. Or
you could go wild lizard hunting, which seems to be a popular
occupation. I gather they're really amusing."

"I hear the ones clutched in the Weyr are better behaved and easier to
train. I think I'll ask around and see what I can find out." The idea
really was growing on her. "Is there anything else I can do to get things
prepared for you?"

"No, I think I'm good. Thank you for all of your ideas, though," Kapera said.

"Of course, Weyrwoman, any time."
