Demir

Demir

"Three months old already. I can't believe it." Rethisa murmured as
she combed her fingers over Mirresa's fuzzy, platinum hair. There
still wasn't much of it yet, but Rethisa hoped that it remained blonde
like hers. It would be best for everyone if Mirresa was a mirror of
her mother, that way no one would ever question her parentage.

It seemed like yesterday she was at Amber Hills realizing she carried
Pevran's baby and wondering what she would do. She was so glad that
the entire harrowing experience of concealing her pregnancy and facing
Demir's wrath was over and behind her. It still never ceased to amaze
Rethisa how lucky she was to have married Demir. If she had lied in
such a way to Verlow... even when she _hadn't_ lied, he had done far
worse to her than Demir. Demir had given Mirresa his name and not only
let them stay in his home, but since her birth he had treated Mirresa
as his own.

**He even treats me like his own.** Rethisa thought, which made her
cheeks flush. Being shy around her husband when it came to marital
things was something Rethisa worked to keep well hidden from others,
since they were suppose to be the picture of a loving couple with a
three month on baby. When it truth, they had never been intimate. But
Rethisa knew that couldn't last forever, Demir was a man and there no
longer seemed to be any bitterness over her betrayal of his trust.

It wasn't as if she were a virgin, that was a far cry from the truth,
but Verlow had been a monster, a man to endure. Pevran had been kind
and gentle, but that had been one night. She didn't know what to
expect from Demir and it made her nervous.

"If you're done with your thinking you'd best get to the table,
you're going to be late." Allera interrupted.

Rethisa's eyes flicked up to the time piece on the mantel. "I'm
going." She was in the same blue dress she had been wearing the day
she'd met Demir on the steps of Amber Hills. It was too cold to go out
for a picnic, as they usually did, so tonight they were dining in,
just the two of them, away from his family. Which Rethisa was grateful
for, even though Mirdella hadn't been outright rude or mean, Rethisa
still couldn't help but feel that her sister-in-law was a bit
conniving.

Tightening her grip on the wrap she had around her shoulders, Rethisa
left the room and walked down the hall to the private dining area,
usually set up for when guests came, like the Lord Holder.

Blue eyes caressed her form as she walked into the room but before she
saw him. She still managed to take his breath away just with a smile
and it had been all he could do not to turn his anger at their
situation back on her. The betrayal and hurt had twisted a knife in
his soul but little by little they'd come to know each other in a way
they hadn't before they'd married.

"Good evening," he said with a warm smile rising from a comfortable
chair near a window. He was thankful he'd made the decisions he had
where she and Miressa were concerned. How bitter and lonely would he
have become? He had seen first hand how that kind of anger and
bitterness could twist a man and vowed never to let it happen to him.
He just hadn't known then how difficult it would be.

"Good evening." She smiled as she stepped further into the room,
grateful for the warmth that the central fireplace provided. "Sorry
I'm late, I was distracted by Mirresa, imagine that."

"Imagine that," he replied with a smile and leaned in to kiss her
cheek. "How was she today?"

"She was good, finding her own feet kept her occupied most of the
time." Rethisa smiled before her eyes turned more serious. "Has there
been any word from Amber Hills?" She waited every day for a message to
come about Zathris.

He smiled at her comments about the baby. There was one thing he could
count on. Rethisa was a good mother to Mirresa. He couldn't quite
forget she was another man's but he was working toward it. "They
haven't found anything yet at least not from the last I've heard." He
put his hands on the outside of her shoulders. "I'm sorry," he said
and gathered her in to hold her for a moment.

Rethisa found the hug nice and warm and solid. In her life she'd only
ever received hugs from her brothers, Zathris and Z'lred, their father
hadn't been the affectionate sort, and neither had Verlow. "I should
visit Benani." Her sister-in-law had been so supportive and helpful
when she'd shown up at Amber Hills half frozen and with only the
clothes on her back.

"Of course," he said leaning back a little but not letting go. He
enjoyed the feeling of her in his arms much more than he'd allowed
himself before and found he didn't really want to let her go. "You can
let the headwoman know we'll be going the day after tomorrow for a few
days. How does that sound?"

She smiled at the word 'we'. Rethisa hadn't wanted to be a bother when
asking to go so she had been prepared to travel there with just Allera
and a few guards. "That sounds great. Thank you, I know how busy you
are here."

"Of course," he smiled and lowered his head to kiss her. This time it
wasn't for show or a simple peck. This was deliberate and intimate in
a way he hadn't been since their wedding day before her revelation.

The kiss surprised her, in a good way, as he had not kissed her like
that since they were first courting at Amber Hills. She also would
have to admit that her husband was a very good kisser-- not that she
had much experience herself, but she was willing to wager marks that
this was considered _good_.

Her response seemed tentative and a little inexperienced but she was
responding and that pleased him. His hands ran up her back and he
gently pulled away. "We should eat." His blue eyes twinkled at her.

"Yes, food." Rethisa said, as if she had forgotten the reason why she
was there. Turning away from her husband she turned her eyes on the
table and took a breath to stabilize herself. Slipping into her chair
she spread her napkin in her lap and reached for the glass of water
beside of her plate.

Demir held her chair while she settled and then slid into his own
across from her. He looked at her for a long moment even though she
didn't meet his eyes. "Rethisa," he said softly.

She looked up from her plate, green eyes luminescent in the glow from
the fire, "Yes?"

"I want..." well yes but he wanted to choose the words carefully. "I
want to come to you tonight." There that wasn't at all awkward. He
wanted her with an ache deep in his bones but he also wanted her to
want him.

Rethisa had wondered when the night would come that her husband would
want to be in the same bed. There had been some fear that the night
would never come because of what she had done, and that maybe he would
just seek out another woman's bed instead like some Lord Holders did.

"My door is always open." she said, with a nervous flutter in her stomach.

He looked at her a moment longer and then nodded. Perhaps a change of
subject would be a good idea though he couldn't really keep his mind
off the night to come. "Dinner looks good," he said and began to eat.
He didn't taste a thing.
