"Excuse me, Saibra, do you have a moment for me?" Genna stood at the door to the Weyrwoman's office with a nervous flutter to her stomach. She didn't want to make a big deal out of this, she really didn't want to cause any commotion, but she was fairly sure that if she didn't report this, it might come back to bite her in the behind later.
"Of course I do, that's a silly question." Saibra straightened in her chair and gestured for Genna to come in and sit. She knew that K'ran and the Weyr's youngest goldrider had been developing something of a relationship before he won the Weyrleadership at River Bluff. Saibra wondered how the long distance was working out for them.
Genna quickly had a seat, arms crossed under the table. "I need to report an incident at the Emerald Falls Gather, which I visited with Minamari and Varlene. I don't want it to made in to a big deal, which it really wasn't, but I felt you would want to know regardless, since three riders from Dragonsfall were involved."
"What happened?" Saibra's tone became more formal and less casual than it had been.
"We were browsing the stalls when someone behind one of the stalls told us to go, because his father would be back and he 'loathed' dragonriders. We were surprised and said we were paying customers, so we didn't see the problem. Then the man came back and he started scolding us, calling us dragonwhores. Before I knew what was happening he grabbed me pretty rough." Genna exposed the bruises developing on her wrists to Saibra. It was clear they would grow to be a rich purple. "Lissath got angry and commanded him to let me go. I think either Minamari or Varlene's dragon flew over too. That startled him enough to let me go and we made our escape. The trader who had warned us caught up with us later to apologize and offer us free mugs. He made sure we got back to our dragons without any further mishaps."
Genna took a deep breath and looked at Saibra when she finished her story, hoping Saibra couldn't tell how fast her heart was beating even just talking about it. "I don't want to make this personally about me, but the man's attitude surprised me and I figured I should report it."
"Given the Hold you were at it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that there are those there with hostility toward dragonriders. Emerald Falls captured a criminal holdless who escapes their guards, is harbored by the Weyr, and then Impresses a bronze dragon and nearly kills an Emerald Falls guard. While the guard goes home nearly dead the bronzerider only has to dig ditches as a consequence for nearly taking a life. To a resident of Emerald Falls that must seem unfair, don't you think?" Saibra still couldn't believe that N'vanik thought the silly song from the Harper Hall was enough to mend the very broken fences between the Weyr and Hold. Had Saibra been handling the issue J'ackt would have been taken to apologize to the guards family, and then any marks he earned for a Turn would be turned over to the guard's family as repayment of the guard's lost salary.
"I will contact Cyradis and let her know about the incident. Dolphin Cove deserves to know that resentment is still festering." She couldn't risk going between herself, but she had no doubt Chioneth could persuade one of the Weyr flits to carry the message.
"I guess I should have thought better about where I was going," Genna said, eyes downcast as she observed her bruised wrists. "I didn't. I'm sorry if I caused the Weyrs any more trouble." She really should have known better. Then again, she should be able to visit Gathers, right? "Was it wrong of me to visit the Gather?"
"Of course it wasn't wrong for you to go, Gathers are open for all. However, you should be more aware of the political climate of an area before you go next time. For instance, had you been more aware of what had transpired between Dolphin Cove and Emerald Falls, you probably would have just left the first time the holder asked you to leave. Sometimes it's better not to try to reason or explain yourself, especially if someone is already so firmly against you. The holders at Emerald Falls already feel as though dragonriders can do whatever they want, the last thing we need to be forced into doing is using our dragons at Gathers to put people in their place. Had you and your companions just turned and left it would have been in the end of the situation."
Saibra felt she probably would have done the same thing at Genna's age, but now Turns of working beneath Weyrwoman and treading carefully to build relations with the Holds had helped her approach situations differently.
"Regardless, he shouldn't have put his hands on a dragonrider, much less a goldrider. I know you want the situation to be over but once I tell N'vanik and Cyradis about it what transpires afterward is up to them."
Genna bowed her had a little. "You are right, I'll think twice before visiting a new place from now on. Sometimes news from other places passes by me, I think, because I'm so caught up in what happens right in front of me. And I understand you have to tell the Dolphin Cove Weyrleaders. Just tell them I wasn't hurt and never was in any real danger." Well, that was kind of true, right? Even if it hadn't felt like it.
"I'll make sure to relay your feelings. I'm glad you are okay, and I am sorry you had to go through that experience. Maintaining Hold-Weyr relations is one of the most important jobs for a goldrider, now you've seen what happens first hand when the relationship isn't so good."
"I have," Genna took a deep breath, trying to clear her thoughts a little. "Thank you for being so understanding. I'm glad I have a Weyrwoman I can talk to." Genna knew if Saibra had been too strict with her in the past, she might have decided on not telling her about this event now, like she had hidden many things from her mother in the past. Knowing she'd get no unjust condemnation made it easier to own up to her mistakes.
