Z'ku stepped into the weyr with a little sigh of contentment. _Their_
weyr. He enjoyed his life as a dragonrider, doing his duty to protect
Pern. But he loved coming home to this little bubble of domesticity.
"Hey," Pierka smiled from where she sat feeding Kazom. "Did you find
them today?" She was referring to the missing Lord Holder and
Dolphineer. She'd be in the air on search tomorrow and wasn't looking
forward to it that much.
"No." Z'ku sighed. There was a good chance the ship had gone down in
the storm and everyone had drowned, but he wanted to stay hopeful.
"Well then," she said. "Maybe Alina and I will tomorrow."
Kazom began pounding on the table with both hands and yelling so
Pierka dished up another spoonful and grinned at Z'ku. "He has a new
trick."
"He has you trained like a canine," Z'ku teased as he went over to
join them. He kissed Pierka's cheek and then planted a kiss on the top
of his son's head.
She couldn't help but grin up at him. Then she wiped the baby's face
and hands with a damp cloth. "Yes, but that's not his new trick," she
grinned and set Kazom on the floor standing between her legs and
holding his hands like she had been for a month or more.
"Go over there and hold out your hands," she motioned with her chin.
Z'ku gave her a curious look, but did as he was told. After walking a
few feet away, he bent and held out his hands toward Kazom. **Is this
what I think it is?**
Kazom bounced as he held onto his mother's fingers and grinned his
two-toothed grin before letting go of Pierka and launching himself at
Z'ku with a squeal.
Pierka watched his little legs pump as he ran toward the bronze rider
and flung himself into the waiting arms. "He didn't start with
walking," she grinned. "He decided running was better."
Z'ku held his breath as his son ran, letting it out in a rush as Kazom
barreled into him. "By the egg! You little overachiever!" Laughing, he
hugged Kazom.
Pierka couldn't help laughing herself. "He is isn't he?" She crouched
down and waited for the return trip.
Z'ku turned the boy around and made sure he was steady before
releasing his little hands.
This time he repeated his performance and launched himself toward
Pierka with another baby chortle of joy. She couldn't help her own
giggle as she caught him.
}:Egg's first flight.:{ Liddith explained to Xemeroth. She could taste
and share Pierka's pleasure.
Xemroth took the comment a bit too literally. }:He is still on the
ground but my rider is very pleased.:{
"It's so wonderful watching him grow." Z'ku wished they could spend
more time together but being a rider meant neither of them could be
full-time parents. They spent most evenings and restdays with Kazom,
though.
Liddith sniffed at the bronze. She knew her riders feelings and it
felt like a first flight to her so that is how the green saw it in her
own mind. But she knew better than to argue with him and just turned
her head away tucking it under her wing.
"Yes it is," she said swinging Kazom up onto her hip and looking back
at Z'ku. "Dinner's already here."
Z'ku went over to take a seat. "So how was your day?"
"It was good," she smiled and stuck their son into his little seat. "I
was thinking that maybe next restday, we can go see your family and
Kazom can show off his new tricks. What do you think?"
"That sounds wonderful." His mother had been quickly charmed by Kazom
and he knew she'd love to see him walk -- or run, as the case may be.
Father was still adjusting to the idea of how Z'ku's family had been
formed and this would be a chance to warm things a bit more.
"Good," she said and nodded. "Family is important." Much more
important to her who was only just finding hers. She reached for his
hand with and gave it a warm squeeze.
He returned the squeeze, smiling at his weyrmate. "Oddly, living at
the weyr has made me appreciate family more."
"Family is a wonderful thing to have," she nodded in full agreement.
