"Pierka!" The young voice called out from the ledge of Pierka's weyr,
the tone hopeful. "Are you busy? Can you talk? I _really really_ need
to talk to you!" Lanniya stuck her head in, her gaze wide. "I checked
to make sure you and Z'ku weren't uhm...busy, but can I come in? It's
really important!"
"Lanniya," Pierka called back. "Come on in," she rose from her couch
and put down the book she'd been reading.
Nearly floating in, Lanniya's face looked a little flushed and she
hurried over to Pierka. "I"m so glad you're here. I need to talk.
About a guy. A _guy_ who likes me. And not just like a friend but as
more, you know!"
"A _guy_?" Pierka repeated in the same tone. "And do you like him too?"
"Not just a guy, but a cute one!" Lanniya gushed. "I do like him and
he even kissed me." She flushed, then hurried on. "Well, actually kind
of more than kissed, but it was Orlaith's flight and I went to his
Weyr and he didn't want to rush me." Her words were hurried. "I don't
know what to do! I've never done _it_. And I wanted to then, but then
he stopped and it was really sweet." She slowed down suddenly with a
long exhale.
"Wait, wait slow down," Pierka reached out her hands. "You went to his
Weyr during a gold flight? What were you thinking?"
Lanniya was about to rattle on, but Pierka's gesture stopped her.
"Well, I had to leave the Weyr with Anaeryth when Orlaith rose. And
K'ale had been really nice to me when he visited, so I went to see him
at Dragonsfall. I forgot that it was so cold there and I rushed off
without my riding leathers, so he had to warm me up." Her eyes glinted
with sudden mischief. "I didn't know he was going to take his shirt
and pants off to warm me up. I wasn't thinking about that."
Pierka raised a hand to her forehead. "Wait Lanniya. Let me get this
straight. You escaped from the gold flight by going to Dragonsfall to
the weyr of a brownrider you hardly knew. You were cold so you got in
his bed with him?? Just how sweet was he?" She was going to have to
find this K'ale and have a serious talk. Her sister was too young but
mostly she didn't want her to go through the kind of pain she had
with T'nom.
Lanniya squirmed a little and her face flushed. "K'ale is really nice!
He took me to the beach and visits me from Dragonsfall. It's not like
I didn't know him at all."
"Well obviously but...," her mind came to a halt and she squinted her
eyes as she rolled the conversation back a few beats. "Wait.. he
stopped?"
"Yes, he did." She slumped back a little in her seat. "He said the
first time was a gift I could only give once. And yeah, he's right,
but shards, I wanted to give it right then and there."
"Yeah," she agreed. "I know how that can happen. It's how I ended up
with Kazom."
"I'm on the teas." She was quick to answer. "I made sure of it, cause
I love kids and all, but I don't want any right now." She peered at
Pierka. "So what do I do? I want to do it, but I want sweetness and
romance too and..." She sighed. "My mind and my body are just all
sorts of jumbled up right now."
"Oh I know that feeling," Pierka smiled. "But you have to be careful.
There is a difference between love and lust. Both have their place as
long as you keep your head about you." She leaned forward. "Look," she
said softly. "It sounds like he is as nice as he seems or he would
have given you want you wanted right then and there. Take it slow and
have your romance Lanniya. You only ever get that first love once."
Her thoughts turned to T'nom once again and those feelings that had
consumed her and had all ended badly for all of them.
But in the end T'nom had gone, Meledei was still alone, and she had
found a wonderful new love in Z'ku. If any of them had won anything
out of that mess, it was her.
"I want you to have a happy memory," she smiled.
Lanniya sighed. She wasn't in _love_ with K'ale, but she did feel that
little flutter every time she thought about him. That wasn't love, was
it? She supposed she could take it slow, even though her body was
telling that 'now now now' was what it wanted. She nodded. "I do too."
She then peered at Pierka and cleared her throat, her mind shifting to
something else. "Pierka...I know you can't remember them, but if you
could see our parents again...would you want to?" She bit her lower
lip and then quickly came up with something that might be feasible. "
I mean, I might be able to get them drawn by a Harper or something for
you."
Pierka thought about that for only a moment before a soft smile curved
her lips though her eyes were still serious. "I think I would," she
said slowly. "Did they look anything like us? Or maybe I should ask if
we look like them."
That set another frisson of determination in Lanniya's belly. Pierka
deserved to see their parents, to have some memory of them. "We look
like our father. You more than me. He had this bright bright blonde
hair. Almost white blonde, but he was tanned cause he was outside all
of the time. And he had blue eyes. He wasn't very big or muscley or
anything, but he was strong. Our mother..." Lanniya's eyes softened.
"She had hair like mine. And her eyes were kind of grey. She gave the
best hugs and I remember that one time, you skinned your knee really
bad and she kissed it better and then it was like it didn't hurt you
anymore."
Pierka smiled with a bit of mist in her eyes as she thought about how
she'd do the same for Kazom at some point. She took a deep breath and
let it out slowly. "I wish I could remember. I really do."
She looked at Pierka's eyes and her heart hurt for her sister. At
least she had her memories, but Pierka didn't have any. None to share
with Kazom or Z'ku...it wasn't right. "Maybe someday you will." Maybe
seeing them again would bring something back. She wished she could
tell Pierka about the /betweening/, but she had been told that only
bronzeriders and goldriders should know. That was the rule. She wanted
to give Pierka some hope, but couldn't find a way to do it. "Anything
could happen."
Pierka smiled at her sister. "I have you now dearest," she put her
arms around Lanniya. "I'm very happy for that much. I can dream the
rest."
