It was after dark when K'ran and Rogueth finally left River Bluff's
grounds. The bronze's mood was grumbly. Convincing him to leave
Orlaith and take his rider out had been hard, but K'ran had prevailed
by reminding his bronze that he needed to get his possessions from
Dragonsfall. Coming to Amber Hills had been a detour, but one K'ran
thought necessary. That the help of another person to pack up his
stuff while he was making reports should make everything go much
faster and then Rogueth could be back to his new mate sooner had
helped convince the bronze.
Rogueth burst out of /between/ above Amber Hills, spiraling down to
land outside so his rider could slip off. The bronze also reached out
for the little firelizard his rider knew about. He sent images of
their arrival to it.
Corran had been done with the day's duties and sitting in the barracks
talking with another guard. Warden broke out of /between/ and started
shrilling. The images that came with the noise were hard to parse, but
the guard got the gist of it - a dragon had arrived and was thinking
about them. "Sorry, I think my brother's here," he said to the other
guard as he pushed back from the table, stood up, and headed outside.
His mind churned through a number of scenarios as he walked. Normally,
Corran tried not to panic. But unusual situations set his mind racing.
It was Rogueth sending to Warden, right? Why would K'ran be here so
late at night? Was everything all right? He couldn't be hurt badly if
he was able to come here. Unless he'd been injured and another
dragonrider was coming to let his family know.
When he arrived outside he saw that it was in fact his brother's
dragon, with his brother still astride. The guard heaved a sigh of
relief, the nerves receding and curiosity taking its place. "What's
going on?" he called up, putting a hand on his hip.
K'ran looked down at his brother. "Are you working a night shift?"
"No, I'm free. Why?"
"Want to come to Dragonsfall and do me a favor? There's an interesting
story behind it."
Corran was a sucker for a good story, and curious about exactly what
was going on. He scrambled up the bronze's offered limb and strapped
in behind his brother, regretting he didn't have a thicker coat on.
Rogueth took off quickly and didn't grab much height before going
/between/ back to Dragonsfall and spiraling down to his weyrledge. His
bugle to the watchdragon carried an extra loudness.
K'ran waited until they'd both dismounted and walked from the ledge to
the inside of the weyr before speaking. "Thank you so much for
agreeing to come."
"You're my brother, of course I'll help. What's going on, anyway?
Showing up after dark, saying you need me to help you out. It's very
suspicious, you know. Has something gone wrong?"
The bronzerider laughed, taking off his cap and running his hand
through his hair. "I may have just caused a small political situation
by accident," he admitted.
Corran had been teasing. That announcement brought him up short. "You did what?"
"I went to River Bluff Weyr today, helping transport people to assist
in the rebuilding efforts," the bronzerider said. "Unexpectedly, there
was a goldflight. We won it."
"What happens when you win a flight at another Weyr? Do you have to
move there?" Corran asked.
He knew Senior Flights meant Weyrleader changes, but he wasn't clear
on if junior flights meant anything other than clutches, at least at
the Weyr you belonged to. But winning at someone else's - Was it a
rude political moment? Was his brother in trouble? The guard was
expecting to hear something bad, but not the words that came next.
"You become Weyrleader, when it's the senior gold," K'ran stated.
The guard's jaw dropped and he stared at his twin, trying to process
that statement. "You just happened to be at River Bluff when their
Senior rose? And now you're their Weyrleader? Have you even _been_
there before?"
"We fly joint Falls with them," K'ran pointed out. "And yes, it
was...interesting timing. But Orlaith made her choice and it was us,
not any of the bronzes already there."
"Wow. So now what happens?" Corran asked. He could see why his brother
had said it would be quite a story.
"I need to talk to the Weyrleader about this, and I need to pack my
stuff to move."
"And that's why you wanted me here. You can't be in two places at
once, you're likely to be chewed out, it's late in the evening, and
you need someone to pack your stuff. So you asked for your brother to
do the scutwork," the guard summed up.
"That's the right of it," K'ran agreed.
The guard had another thought. If K'ran was moving to River Bluff,
then... "What about Genna? Are you going to talk to her?"
The bronzerider stopped mid-step. He hadn't exactly forgotten about
her, it was just that he'd been so busy with folks at River Bluff, and
then preparing to converse with the Weyrleaders, that he hadn't had a
chance to consider what he was going to say to the goldrider he'd come
to care deeply about.
"I don't know," he said honestly, aware his brother was staring.
"You've got to tell her something," Corran pointed out. "If you just
leave without saying anything, that's not going to end well."
K'ran sighed. "I know that. I just don't know what to tell her. It's
not like I planned this. It just kind of...happened."
"She deserves to hear it from you, and not the rumor mill," Corran pointed out.
K'ran thought about pointing out that she'd have heard already, but
refrained. "After I speak to the Weyrleaders, I'll speak to her."
Corran suspected that was going to take awhile. Which gave him time to
pack his brother's stuff, he supposed. "And by then I should have this
all packed up."
The guard looked around the weyr and winced, remembering how much his
brother collected. "Although I don't know if I'll get it all right..."
"I'll be back to help, and I'll get a drudge to bring up some trunks
and bags. General rule is furniture is staying for the next occupant,
most bedfurs are staying, anything that looks like a collectible or a
display item goes," K'ran said.
Corran nodded. "I _think_ that makes sense." But it looked like a lot
of his brother's stuff was going to fall into the 'packing it up'
group.
"Good. I'll be back," K'ran promised. Unless the Weyrleaders roasted
him alive, but that seemed highly unlikely...
