Esiah

Esiah

She had finished the type setting for all the text. Now for the rest. Asley
puttered around her workshop, waiting on the harper who she had asked to
assist her with this particular project. As such, she had actually offered
him a small part of the payment for the commission. If it worked out, then
perhaps she could depend on him in future.

Esiah arrived with his leather satchel full of art supplies slung casually
over one shoulder. Asley's offer to illustrate some of the healer manuals
had actually been a relief. Business in the portrait department had been
slow of late and they had gotten a little monotonous as well. This offered
a nice change to his daily routine.

"How's your day been?" he asked by way of greeting.

"Breakfast was good. Since then, it's just been one task and another." She
gestured to the table where the old print of the manual was. She had given
him the only other copy she'd borrowed to look over. "So do you think you
can illustrate them so I can make stamps? Individual illustrations will
take too long for this I think. Too many copies needed." Stuffing her hands
in her pockets, she looked over his supplies, remembering her days at the
harper hall.

The journeyman pulled a drawing from his satchel. "I went ahead and did one
sketch so you could determine if this is what you need for your stamps."

Walking forward, she extended her hands for the drawing. Hard lines and
less fills would be easier for a stamp. Asley would need thick ridges and
clear strokes.

Esiah raised an eyebrow as he waited for Asley's response, "So...?"

"I think it's a great draft. Maybe just thicker lines for the boundaries."
She pointed to where she was talking about. Unlike usual, Asley was more
animated when dealing with craft matters and this particular project was
somewhat of a challenge since it meant improving upon what the Weyr's
printers had done previously. "Do you have a charcoal? I bet just a bit
more shading..."

Esiah lifted the flap on his leather satchel and withdrew a piece of
charcoal from an inner pocket, "Here." He offered the instrument to Asley.

Setting down the drawing on the nearby clean table, she took the charcoal
and carefully added a darker thickness around a few more lines to make them
harder and stand out more. "Like that width there."

"Alright, I can do that." he agreed. "Do you have an example book that
you're going by, or is this an entirely new creation?"

"There's an example but it's rather old. I was thinking an update might be
in order." Looking around to see where the volume sat, she located on a
nearby shelf. Pulling down the volume, she reseated herself and opened it
so that Esiah could see.

Esiah's shoulder brushed Asley's as he leaned in to look at the book,
taking in minute details with his experienced gaze. "Could I have this to
use?" It would make re-drawing the sketches much easier.

"You can but it's all I have so you'll have to give it back." She could set
the type off the old plates. It was hard to let the old volume go but she
could get her hands on one more probably if it came down to it.

"Of course. I'll take good care of it." Esiah promised as he slipped the
book into his satchel. "I'll get this back to you as soon as I'm finished."
