Characters: A'dryn, D'lorn
Description: A'dryn lets D'lorn know he has experience
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 12 of Turn 8
A'dryn took a seat in the office and rubbed his palms against his trousers. He couldn't even look at D'lorn. "I um, I took care of what I needed to, sir. So you don't have to worry about me."
That gave the greenrider pause. He tried to think of what A'dryn was referring to. With a look at the young man's face though, he began to guess at what he was hinting at. "And did everything....go allright?"
"Um, yes." A'dryn's cheeks burned with embarrassment. "The person was very kind." Even now he couldn't admit out loud that he'd had sex with a man.
D'lorn had guessed that A'dryn would still be reticent even afterwards. The young man coming to him and announcing it had happened had shocked him just a bit though. Perhaps it was a mark of just how much trust there
was between the two of them. "Good then. And do you feel like you would be able to participate in that aspect of a flight then without any problems, A'dryn?"
The weyrling hesitated. As horribly embarrassing as the subject was, this was an important part of his training so he felt he should be honest. "I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of a flight. To be perfectly honest it still scares me. But I don't believe I will
inhibit Nalarith in any serious way. I understand how it all... works so I won't panic."
"Understanding and being able to handle are two different things. I do appreciate the progress you've made and it speaks to your sense of duty and your ability to deal with things in order to become the rider you need to be." D'lorn leaned forward into his seat and scratched his chin for a moment. "Once Nalarith takes over you won't be able to panic. It's the before and after that matters. One thing I can suggest but it would be your choice-if you wanted to try mothing a flight, that will give you the best glimpse into the after. The before...there's no way but to do it."
"What is mothing?"
"During a flight, once the dragon has made her choice-the ones that weren't picked will often try to find satisfaction elsewhere. Some have mates but others do not. So men and women will offer themselves. It can be very pleasurable since flightlust is intense. It can also be more....intense than normal relations. So they seek it out. For you...it's probably the best way to offer a picture of that part of a flight." D'lorn spoke calmly and evenly as he described the experience, not wanting
to make it seem like anything out of the ordinary or something A'dryn had to do. He was just offering a suggestion.
A'dryn's face went ashen. "Oh no. I could never do that." He'd seen the men gathered around a flight, turned into nothing but lustful beasts. It was bad enough that he would be taken by one of those men in Nalarith's flight, but to _choose_ to be involved in that?
"Well then we can only hope that you'll be fine when the time comes." D'lorn asked his next question though he knew what the answer likely was. "And how did Nalarith react?"
"She handled it much better than I did. She was very encouraging, actually." She'd spent a lot of time comforting him afterwards, telling him he was perfect and she loved him.
"A very good sign. I don't think she'll have any problems. If you trust your dragon, A'dryn, you'll be fine." D'lorn smiled to himself, remembering how he'd been as a younger rider. Trader born as he was, though, he hadn't had to worry about the same things as A'dryn.
The young rider nodded. "I did my best to care for her while she was very young and now it seems she's returning the favor." Nalarith seemed to have something of a maternal aspect.
The pair were well matched and D'lorn didn't doubt it for a moment. "You're doing very well in lessons. How do you feel about graduation, A'dryn?" He knew it was a hard question, but he wanted to get an honest answer.
A'dryn considered it for a moment. "I'm worried about facing Thread, but any reasonable person would be. I know my duty, though. I was meant to be a dragonrider." That was the way someone like him could be of real value to Pern.
"It'll get easier after you've done it a few times. Although some parts never get any easier." Losing wingmates and seeing death all around you was just part of the job-but you never forgot them. "Don't ever let down your guard with Thread."
"Yes, sir." He didn't know how he _could_.
