Kapera

It was a nice day for a walk. The weather was cloudy, but Kapera found
she didn't mind. The bright summer sun occasionally felt like too
much, and there was a mild breeze that kept the heat from being
stifling. She had wandered towards the edge of the weyrbowl, past the
lake, greeting people along the way and stopping to chat here and
there.

One face she hadn't seen in a few sevendays. The goldrider altered
course to head over to her wingmate. "Jeyme! How goes?" she called.

Jeyme looked up from the blanket she was stretched out on and shaded
her eyes with one hand. She'd had some transport duties to take care
of earlier that morning, but as soon as she'd gotten back to the Weyr
she had put on her shorts, grabbed her blanket and book, and headed to
the outskirts of the Weyrlake.

"Kapera! Come sit!" She waved the goldrider over.

That was an invitation she couldn't pass up. "How are you doing?" she
asked once she arrived at Jeyme's blanket.

"I am good, enjoying a little down time. How are you?" It was rare to
just have time to sit and relax between duties, drills, and her
family.

"About the same. I want a bit of a break before Panitath gets
grounded. How's adjusting to the wing again?"

It was no secret that she had taken an extra long "maternity" break
before coming back to the Wing, mostly because of the appointments
that Cyradis had help set up for her with a mind healer.

"It's good, actually. Quinneth is much happier now that we're back to
our duties."

"Dragons get really restless. Even more so than their riders. Riyanth
wanted to be flying again long before she was ready," Kapera admitted.

Jeyme smiled a little, "I think she's the most upset that her mating
flight has been delayed. I'm sure she'll make up for it by being
extremely grouchy for the next one." As long as N'vanik didn't win it
Jeyme figured she could deal. "How are things with J'nus?"

"Well good luck on your next. I assume you're hoping for Yumath?" she asked.

"Yumath would be my first preference, of course, but if he doesn't win
then it needs to be anyone but N'vanik. That does nothing but create
more trouble between me and D'hol." Jeyme had never done anything to
remotely suggest that she had feelings for the Weyrleader, but that
never seemed to matter to her weyrmate.

At the mention of J'nus, Kapera grinned. "It's pretty well. We still
seem happy. I haven't been doing anything to rock the boat, even when
I get the impulse to do something totally outrageous."

"What sort of outrageous thing might you do?" Jeyme asked curiously.

"Any number of fun things to try out. That bluerider who dresses like
a girl, his name's V'lon maybe? I'd give him a try. Maybe with another
bluerider in the mix." The idea was certainly fascinating.

It was the last thing that Jeyme expected Kapera to say and she found
herself busting out with laughter. "I just did not expect to hear
_that_ come out of _your_ mouth."

"No? I guess some of my reputation didn't transfer with me," Kapera
said, grinning at Jeyme's expression.

"You have been pretty tame since you've been at Dolphin Cove, I don't
think anyone would expect you to do something crazy." Jeyme gave a
mock gasp, "Why, you've become respectable!"

"Perish the thought. Maybe I _do_ need to pick him up in the Dining Cavern."

Jeyme giggled, and suddenly realized how much she had missed laughing.
It was nearly sobering to realize that she so rarely laughed when she
was with D'hol, and ever since her falling out with Talryne, there
really wasn't anyone else that she hung around with. "I have missed
you Kapera."

"I've missed talking to you, too. It's nice to just be able to hang
out and say ridiculous things. The kind the menfolk don't get."

"Yeah, they definitely just don't get it sometimes. When I say
something outrageous to D'hol he just gets that look," she narrowed
her eyes a bit and wiped the smile from her face, doing her best to
imitate her broody weyrmate.

Kapera snickered. "Very broody. Does he wear it a lot?"

Jeyme's face cleared as she considered the question, "He was wearing
it less, especially after Dheymin was born, but ever since Panitath's
last flight it has basically been firmly in place."

The goldrider winced. "I'm sorry. He's jealous of N'vanik? Is he
taking his disappointment out on you?"

She had never thought about it quite like that until Kapera posed the
question. "It feels like that sometimes. After all, he doesn't live
with Cyradis, he can't take his disappointment out on her. I don't
think N'vanik would be a source of contention between us if he wasn't
possibly Dheymin's father. I think D'hol feels that N'vanik has taken
his one true love, Cyradis, and also taken his one opportunity to
raise a son."

"I can understand why he might feel jealous of N'vanik, but it's not
your fault who won your flight and that he might be the father. That's
a heavy burden of his insecurities to put on you, it sounds like."
Kapera was trying to keep judgement out of her tone in favor of
sympathizing with her friend.

"The other evening he told me he was done 'fighting it' that I could
do whatever I pleased with N'vanik. That really pissed me off. It
makes me angry when he tries to paint me as the villain for being
_compassionate_ and allowing N'vanik to spend time with what could be his
child. You don't see me blowing up every time D'hol runs around with
Kieyla or goes to Cyradis's weyr to collect her." Jeyme was collecting
steam now, having kept these thoughts and emotions so bottled up.

"If he can see his daughter with someone else, you should be able to
share Dheymin with N'vanik. It's not like you claimed N'vanik as the
father and are cutting D'hol out entirely," she agreed.

"For all intents and purposes, in my heart, D'hol _is_ Dheymin's
father, that's why I suggested we name him so closely after D'hol. I
just can't be some cold-hearted bitch who cuts N'vanik out when there
is the possibility that Dheymin is his son." Jeyme raised her
shoulders and sighed a little. "I sometimes think that because I've
worked so hard to integrate myself into Weyrlife that D'hol forgets
how hard this is for me being raised from the Hold."

"So he's weyrbred himself? He sounds more holdbred if he's fixating so
hard on how Dheymin should just be yours. You've adapted very well, if
you're making such an effort," the goldrider offered.

Jeyme's smile didn't reach her eyes, "I worked so hard to adapt
because..." and she revealed something she had never even allowed
herself to think, "because I was afraid that if I didn't then I would
lose D'hol."

"Ohhhh," Kapera said softly. She could understand why Jeyme was
feeling like this now. "So you've been changing to fit what D'hol
wants, and that's fine for him. But you show a bit of backbone for
what you think's right, and then you feel punished?"

"Exactly. Somehow when I try to start that conversation I end up the
bad guy." Jeyme closed her eyes and shook her head as she tilted her
face up toward the sun. "I shouldn't talk so much about it, you will
think D'hol has no redeeming qualities."

"I'm sure he has some if you're staying with him. They fly well,"
Kapera said. "Sounds like you need to talk about it with someone, if
it's been bottled up for awhile. So I don't mind hearing about it."

Jeyme wrapped her arms around her knees which she drew up to her
chest, "Thanks. I use to talk about this kind of stuff with Talryne
but we've been on bad terms ever since I got pregnant."

"I didn't know you knew her." To be honest, Kapera tried to avoid her.
There had been a time when she'd thought she might lose her dragon,
and any reminder of that feeling...

"We were rather good friends for a while, we share a love of knitting,
but she blamed me for not standing up to D'hol and giving N'vanik more
of a say in Dheymin's life." That had been a tough time, torn between
her friend and her weyrmate.

"Oh, I'm sorry." That sounded terribly awkward. "Well, I'm glad you
feel like you can talk to me."

"Yeah, well, you're a much better option than Cyradis. Sobbing in
front of her about not being able to leave Dheymin was the highlight
of my Turn, I promise you." She said, her voice rich with sarcasm.

"I can imagine that wasn't pleasant. Especially not given who she is.
It got easier?"

Jeyme flicked her hair back out of her face, "Yeah, it's better now,
still hard, but managable.

"If I can do anything, you'll have to let me know. I want to see you
happy here," Kapera assured.
