Anaeryth landed at the command and settled her wings on her back as
she waited for the green. }: Ihlath is calm now. :{
Ihlath was calm now, with two metallic dragons there giving her
reassurance. They had gone to the wrong place, but they were safe. Her
rider was panicking, though. Fadira slid off of Ihlath's back as soon
as the green landed. She stayed in contact with her lifemate's hide,
needing the reassurance. The Weyrlingmaster's Second was going to yell
at them both, and it was all her fault. Lanniya didn't deserve to be
yelled at. She was the one who'd made the mistake. Lanniya had just
come to rescue her.
A'kades was furious with the young goldrider, and concerned for the
green weyrling, and he needed a moment. He waited until both pairs
were down before Volaith landed.
The green weyrling burst into tears as soon as he approached them.
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to - to do this."
A'kades had expected them both to be nervous about being called out.
But he hadn't expected overwhelmed tears. He wasn't the hugging type,
but he did step forward and fish a handkerchief out of his flying
jacket. "Here. Take a minute to calm yourself."
Fadira took the kerchief and began dabbing at her face.
He turned to Lanniya. "Let's talk behind Volaith."
That way the bronze and Ihlath were both between them and Fadira. The
green weyrling could compose herself, and he could chastise Lanniya
without her hearing.
Lanniya moved to hug Fadira, trying to calm her down herself when
A'kades turned to her. "But..." She wanted to comfort Fadira, make her
feel better. That's what she was supposed to do, wasn't it? But she
followed A'kades, her brow knitting as they came around the big
bronze. "Yes?"
He didn't want to terrify her into the same state as the green
weyrling, but he did want to impress on her how serious it was. His
tone was cold and serious, though he made an effort to keep his volume
down.
"You shouldn't have come out here to get Ihlath and Fadira without
checking with anyone. The Weyrlingstaff heard her call for help. I was
responding. We want the weyrlings to stay put so we can focus on
rescuing the lost one. What if you'd gotten lost trying to find her
because the visualization wasn't clear? What would the Weyr do without
its newest gold?"
"But she was scared and Anaeryth and I could help," Lanniya
immediately protested. "I thought that's what I was supposed to do
since I'm a goldrider. If Anaeryth thought she couldn't have done it,
she wouldn't have."
"You're sure you wouldn't have tried anyway, at the risk of both your
lives?" A'kades fixed her with his best stern look. "I know with your
talent you likely could have seen Ihlath's visual as well as Anaeryth did,
but that's also a potential extra risk.
He sighed. "I understand you wanted to help. You're still a gold weyrling,
however. You're not fully trained and you don't have full authority yet.
You should not have acted without checking."
She chewed on her lower lip, now realizing fully what she had done.
She had just reacted instead of really thinking things through. "I"m
sorry. I...I just wanted to do the right thing. That's all."
"It's a good desire to have. But you could have _died_. It was an
unacceptable risk to both you and your dragon. You've probably scared half
the Weyr," the bronzerider told her sharply.
"Now let's go talk to Fadira about what happened. She's pretty upset, and
maybe you can calm Ihlath and help her out."
He walked back towards the green weyrling, hoping what he suggested to
Lanniya would focus her on what she could do to help out that wouldn't be
nearly as risky or impulsive. Maybe watching how he handled the situation
would show her a different kind of authority. He couldn't imagine his
style being like Rhosyn or Lenala's.
Fadira had stopped sniffling but the hand that held the kerchief was
wavering. "Yes-s s-s-sir?" she stuttered out.
"I want to know what happened. Can you tell me what was going through
your mind when you /betweened/?" A'kades asked, gentling his tone to
prevent her from panicking.
"I was thinking that once we made it back to the Weyr that we'd be full
riders and then I can go home," she whispered.
}:I took her to the place she was thinking of. That was where she
wanted. That is what I did,:{ Ihlath said to everyone present. Her tone
was agitated.
A'kades' tone was flat, his words hanging in the air between himself and
the weyrlings like a pronouncement of doom. "Fadira, _you_ are the
leader in the air. That means you have to focus on your duty over your
wants. Ihlath picked up on your wants and made a decision because your
will wasn't strong enough. That could have killed you both. Today we
could have lost 2 weyrling pairs and 4 lives because of impulsiveness
and a lack of control."
He let that sink in, then continued.
"Both of you are officially on punishment duty. You're confined to your
weyrs outside of classes and tending to your dragons for the next two
sevendays. That means no exploring and limited socializing. On the
restday, you'll both be assigned to elevator duty and chores."
The bronzerider looked over at the green weyrling. "Fadira, you'll also
have extra visualization practice in the morning and discipline drills
during the evening. You _have_ to learn to control her."
Fadira hung her head, but didn't say anything else.
A'kades turned to Lanniya. "I'll be talking to the other goldriders
about what you did here. They will also have say in your punishment."
Once he was certain they knew where they stood, he continued. "Let's
mount up. Volaith will give the images to go back to River Bluff. You're
to stay with the weyrlingstaff while the rest of the class finishes
practice. Your punishments start tonight."
Lanniya shrank a bit at the punishment, even as she glanced at Fadira.
She had no idea what Rhosyn or Lenala would say about this foray. She
wasn't sure she wanted to think about it and it was too much to hope
that A'kades would conveniently forget to mention it. She climbed up on
Anaeryth, shoulders a little slumped.
Fadira gave Lanniya a sorrowful look. She felt terrible about getting
them both in trouble.
A'kades sighed once they got back to River Bluff. He made sure the green
and the gold landed, then went to get the next pair up. They still had
dozens of weyrlings to get through. Hopefully these would be quieter...
