Description: The wedding.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 13, day 30 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Zathris, Benani
The day until now had been a complete blur. Demir stood at the head of
the aisle in front of the Harper though in the future he'd not be able
to identify the Harper or how he got into position to save his life.
His heart pounded in his chest as the tall form of Zathris appeared
briefly crossing behind the guests. Then she appeared and his entire
world telescoped down to the veiled form on the Lord Holder's arm.
His bride.
For the second time in her life, Rethisa was wearing the traditional
red dress that signified her as the bride. Her platinum blonde, nearly
white, hair was piled into curls that gathered at the crown of her
head and then cascaded down the back of her neck. The chiffon dress
she wore was high-waisted, gathered in just the right places as to
hide the baby-bump that she was concealing.
She peered through her veil at the fine figure Demir cut standing at
the front of the room waiting for her. **How did I get this lucky?**
He knew she drew all eyes but that didn't matter in the least all his
focus was on the woman who would soon be his wife. Beautiful and
sweet, she was everything he could possibly desire. When she reached
him and her hand was placed in his he gave it a soft squeeze and
turned to face the Harper.
A tremor passed through Rethisa's body as the Harper began speaking in
a deep voice that carried around the room. Her heart was pounding a
deafening staccato in her ears, so loud that she nearly missed her cue
to repeat after the man, vowing and pledging herself to Demir. For
days now Rethisa had kept herself solely on getting through the
wedding, and now the reality of a wedding night was beginning to crash
down on her. There would be no way to hide her pregnant belly from
Demir once her clothes were gone... and then what would he do? Would
he demand a divorce immediately? **Does he like me enough yet that he
might let me stay? I could claim that I'm sick with nerves and fatigue
and maybe he'll put the consummation off...** But that would only buy
her one night at best.
Bright blue eyes locked with hers and he saw nothing else even as he
repeated his own vows. His eyes traced her lips through the veil and
the curve of her neck. He couldn't help the sensations that coursed
through him. Happiness was right there in front of him in a way he'd
never thought possible again.
"You may kiss the bride."
He slowly lifted the veil and then wrapping his arms around her small
form, tenderly kissed her.
Demir's touch was soft and warm, cherishing even, a very different
form of affection than what she had experienced from Verlow. Despite
the deception on her part, Rethisa couldn't help the way her heart
swelled a little as she and Demir parted to a generous smattering of
applause as the doors opened for the new husband and wife to lead
their way out to their reception.
He turned and tucked her hand into his elbow, then nodded his respect
to Lord Zathris and Lady Benani and led her back down the aisle and
toward the reception. More couples would avail themselves of the
Harper's availability as Turns End and Beginning were always popular
for couples. But he didn't care or even register the next bride as he
was so involved with his own.
They stepped into a private room for their moment of privacy before
they were inundated with well wishes. "You looked lovely my dear," he
said as he crossed to the refreshments table. "Would you like some
wine?"
"A sip would be lovely." Rethisa flashed him a smile, inwardly hoping
that a little wine would help settle her nerves.
He poured two small glasses and carried them back to where there was a
small sofa. "Sit," he said as he handed her the glass with a smile.
"We'll have to be walking around for hours. You should rest while you
can."
"Thank you." She murmured as she took the glass of wine and sat as her
husband had directed. The wine tasted cold and refreshing, but she
limited herself to only small sips.
He also came back to her with a small plate if tidbits including fruit
and nuts. Of course there was a reception but that food was a least an
hour off and he thought she looked a little pale. "Are you alright?"
"Oh yes," her eyes flashed up to his. "I'm just a little tired. My
handmaid had me up at the crack of dawn this morning to start on all
of this," she gestured to her hair, make-up and clothing.
"I shall have to give her a nice bonus," he smiled. "You look
breathtaking," he caressed the side of her face and leaned in for a
kiss.
For a moment, as their lips touched, Rethisa imagined that she was the
girl she had been at sixteen- naive and innocent. There would be only
vtols in her stomach because she was nervous about becoming a woman,
not because she was hiding a secret that would inevitably hurt her new
husband. When they parted Rethisa smiled up at him because just for a
little while she would keep pretending that everything was okay.
"I suppose we should get back out there now."
He didn't want to let go of her but she was right. He stood and held
out his hand to help her to her feet. "A nice lull in the storm," he
said and tucked her hand into his elbow just as a scratch came at the
door. "Here we go," he said as it opened and they emerged into the
hall where cheers greeted the happy pair.
