}:Naryath, how is your rider doing?:{ Chaneth inquired. His own was
in a black mood, but he was still thinking about others, like the
rider of the young green he was reaching out to.
}: He is studying,:{ Naryath replied, sounding bit puzzled. Her rider
been poring over charts and books whole day.
}:Ask him to come see my rider when he has time. Mine wishes to talk to
him.:{
}: We will come, :{ Naryath promised before relaying the message to
her rider. }: Chaneth's wants to see you.:{
**O-keyy, coming,** Ged replied and abandoned the hides. He had one of
the small, upperlever weyrs without access from lower caverns. He
liked, it was small and cozy and he had furnished it himself. It
didn't take him long to fly down to weyrbowl and go knocking L'pin's
office-door.
"G'dori, come in, take a seat." L'pin gestured at the tray of cookies,
juice, and klah on the small side table. "How are you doing?"
G'dori sat down and considered the question. He couldn't say he was
fine or even okay, but he had family and friends helping him thru this
all. "Could be worse," he finally said. "I only woke up three times
last night," he added. Watching Satai die all over again and again
wasn't exactly his idea of good nights sleep.
L'pin nodded. "I understand the feeling. I was worrying about you.
What you did was brave."
"Thank's. But it didn't work. We were too far up. Does the Thread fell
on constant speed or does it vary? Depending on weather or wind? I
know the direction varies based on air currents," G'dori sounded
frustrated when he dropped out the questions that had been bothering
him. "In rope-drills the ropes always fell on same speed."
"Thread can be different sizes and fall differently because of that.
The high levels don't feel like the low levels. But it's hard for us
to replicate that," the bluerider admitted. He knew the simulations
weren't perfect, but he hadn't figured out how to modify them yet.
G'dori's questions were great ones. "You're right about weather and
wind. Bad weather with high winds can make it fall slower, can send it
across the sky diagonally, or it can even blow up in updrafts. Those
conditions are chaotic and the most dangerous. But what's puzzling is
that sometimes Falls are just extremely heavy and fast when they hit
no matter what the weather is, and we don't know why."
"I could ask about it from uncle A'dori, he's starsmith. The problem
is I wouldn't understand a half of what he would try to explain,"
G'dori remarked dryly after listening L'pin's answer.
L'pin laughed. "Is he a good person to ask about teaching the star
chart lessons?" he'd always hated those.
"Well, yes, but I don't know if he's such a good teacher. After his
class most of his pupils would need that moonshine his friend makes,"
the memory of it's taste still made G'dori grimace.
L'pn mock shivered. "Not moonshine!" he said over dramatically.
"Yes, it was horrible. I'm pretty much there was flame thrower fuel
mixed into it," Ged said.
"Sounds like what to drink when you hate yourself." That got
uncomfortably close to how he was feeling for a moment. But joking
with the weyrling was helping.
"Is there anything I can do for you? That you need to ask before
training's done?"
Ged shook his head, he had already asked the questions that bothered
his mind. "I miss her. I liked her. I know some of the others thought
she was annoying and weak. But I have family, a big one and other
friends, I'll be alright. Nothing like baby leaking to your wher-hide
pants to remind you what is important."
"Children do that," L'pin agreed. "Were you two close, or just
friendly? I know there was some tensions in your class..."
"Just friendly. She was nice. Most people are nice when you just got
to know them," G'dori said, revealing something from his core
personality.
"I like to think so too. Even people like J'ackt, who don't do well
with others, just need a chance. You're good with getting people to
open up," L'pin guessed.
"I haven't been able to crack him open yet. Me starting to drool
around him doesn't help," G'dori said.
"He's not a fan?" the bluerider asked dryly. He could see J'ackt not
being comfortable with some part of weyrlife. "He seems to have some
friends at least."
"Yes, just not male greenriders. I suppose we make him uncomfortable
and defensive," Ged rolled his eyes.
"Holders are weird," L'pin stage-whispered. "They get used to it
eventually."
"I hope so. Bronzes chase greens", G'dori replied.
"Are you ready for that to come up soon?" He was weyrbred, hopefully
he wasn't dreading it like some of the holder kids.
"Nothing to worry about it. I'm eagerly expecting it," Ged grinned.
"Then I don't have to give you a final lecture about it. Speaking of
that." L'pin hesitated, wondering how best to bring it up. Or if it was
even appropriate. But G'dori was much closer to her age and very
non-threatening. And as he'd said earlier, he was compassionate and cared
about the rest of the class.
"Are you close with Alina at all? Or do you know who is? Someone needs to
talk to her about preparation for hers, and as an older man and rider of a
catching dragon I don't know what to say that I haven't said in class. I'm
concerned that she hasn't taken any precautions yet."
"I'm not terribly close with her. But I can try," G'dori replied. He
tried to remember with whom of the girls Alina spent most time. "Only
name that pops up is Ikalis, they seem to be good friends."
"I'll talk to her, too. This class doesn't need any bad mating
flights," he mused.
"This class has certainly had it's share," G'dori agreed.
"It has indeed. Thanks for stopping in to see me today. I appreciated going
over things with you."
"My pleasure," Ged replied and got up to leave.
